Here's a link to a play where an onside kick only goes two yards! Onside kicks in the NFL are required to go 10 yards or else its a penalty. Thanks.

actually if you go by the wikipedia about onside kick it wont be a penalty

onside kick = https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onside_kick

under Modern American football usage

The kick must cross the receiving team's restraining line (normally 10 yards in front of the kicking team's line), unless the receiving team touches the ball before that line.

so if you go by the wikipedia it wont be a penalty.

will check NFL site and update if that is different.

NFL's rule book for it = http://www.nfl.com/rulebook/kickoff

A kickoff is illegal unless it travels 10 yards OR is touched by the receiving team. Once the ball is touched by the receiving team or has gone 10 yards, it is a free ball. Receivers may recover and advance. Kicking team may recover but NOT advance UNLESS receiver had possession and lost the ball.

Even if it was an option to make them rekick, there would be no reason for Baltimore to do so and risk a successful attempt the next time.

the question is if it would have been recovered by the kicking team would it have been a penalty on mfn?

Yes, MFN does correctly require the 10-yard distance.
