I've moved to taking a completely analytics based approach to the game planning. I have a lot of notes, but nothing that I want to generalize yet.

My next post will be about defending exploit plays (212 FL Hitch, 221 Deep Corners, 113 Flare).

You have to understand that, with a new version about to come out, most of us will be squeamish about telling people what to do. That said, this thread will help people like you:

Some fairly simply rules to follow...

First
Adjust player weights where speed is the primary attribute for RB,TE,WR,LB,CB,SS & FS
and secondary for
DE and DT

Adjust player weights for CBs for M2M and B&R coverage.

Adjust QB primary player weights for pass accuracy.

second

When choosing offensive and defensive plays don't select 40/30 plays....trim it down to 25/20 max. Only so many plays actually work.

On defense use Man coverages since your weights are designed that way and zone is sketchy.

Use trail and error on plays selected based on yards average over the course of 4,8 and eventually 16 games until all plays have a 4.0 or higher average.

Third

Make rules for time management to start.

Run the ball when ahead by 8 with under 6 minutes remaining.

Pass the ball when down big in the fourth.

Go for it on 4th and short when in opponents territory when behind.

Play prevent defense when up big using deep cover and 100% pass key.

100% pass key on all offensive formations that are pass only...5WR etc.

There are some good things with the post above, but there is also a number of not good things with it. This is the worst.

The common myth in the MFN forums is that only some plays work. This is not totally accurate. There are many plays that work, but they work against specific defenses and not against others. This requires a level of game planning that most don't have time for, so you end up with offenses running the same passing plays.

I commonly use 35-40 plays and vary my offensive plays per game in some leagues. Notice the some. If you're going to this level of game planning, you have to cut your leagues down.

Agree to disagree on this!

When you are looking at 50-75 offensive snaps per game....40 plays seems a bit much to me.

I can only share what has worked for me. Setherick is a genius and knows more then I ever will but I have won 35 titles across multiple leagues.

I'm willing to bet Seth has 100 rules while I'm limited to 19 of which only 12-15 are active per game.

I have 40 active plays, 7 rules total (of which some are inactive) and I'm sure I could have won more championships one way or the other.

I think it's fair to say that there's a "big handful" of plays that does better than "the rest", but I have no problem picking out 50-60 plays that COULD all be part of a functional (albeit not optimal) playbook. I think that's the main difference here.

If you go for optimal and "must always work", then I'm sure we're looking at less than 40 plays. If you go for useable and "should mostly work", then there's a whole lot of options to work outside of the box.

No, what Fred is referring to above is the 20-25 most common plays that people run.

Without looking:

113 - FL Slant
113 - HB Flare
113 - Quick Slant
113 - TE Quick Out
122 - WR Deep
203 - Slot Short WR Deep
203 - WR Quick Out
203 - WR Out
203 - FL Post
203 - WR Curl
212 - FL Hitch (game breaker)
212 - TE Middle
212 - PA FB Flat
212 - Hard Slants
212 - Quick Slants
212 - Max Protect
221 - Deep Corners / TE Streak
221 - TE Out
311 - HB Downfield
311 - PA TE Flats

These are all of the boom/bust passing plays that are ultra effective against some defenses and ineffective against other. It's why in leagues that are half-AI or rookie owners, you can put up a ton of yards.

Similarly, on the running side, the 113 runs are very effective against most of the nickel defenses, which the game defaults to against the 113.

Against owners that are strictly game planning or running a lot of rules, most of those plays are ineffective. Or become strictly boom/bust. I've had owners - maybe even Fred - win in shoot outs with me where I controlled the ball 40+ mins and scored 35+ points because their QB connected on 4 big TDs on the FL Hitch despite completing 12/40.

No Seth....thats not what I'm talking about.

Using less plays.....regardless of the plays selected (I use different playbooks in different leagues and some of those plays aren't available to me).

If you shorten the playbook....play knowledge and familiarity grow and those plays become staples of the offense.

If you go back to my original post...I said basic rules to help....once owners find a core group of successful plays...they can begin the process of expanding the play selection. Someone new shouldn't worry about selected 40 plays because they might be called zero or once per game. This accelerates the process!
