If you put a player on IR does it free up an extra roster spot?

Make this decision carefully. Otherwise, you can risk permanently benching a starter who then makes a faster than expected comeback.

It's just a rookie backup that is hurt so no big deal. I just wanted to make sure if I went into the sim tonight with 54 guys including the one on IR I wouldn't get a guy cut automatically.

You will be ok - the salary still counts but not his position. If you go to the depth chart page you can see how many players are counting against your max and it will display in red if you are over or under what would cause the AI to take over.

This might be a good time to bring up some of the 2016 rule changes and general league changes. For instance--the big one--is St. Louis going to be moved to LA in all MFN leagues? Also, will the touchback line be moved to the 25? And, relevant to this post, will the new IR rules come into effect. Essentially, a player no longer has to be designated to return if placed on IR and any player on IR can come back after six weeks.

* St Louis is being moved to LA as standard leagues are rolling into their new seasons.
* Kickoffs will be moved to the 25 but that will most likely be part of the next release.
* The new IR rules in the NFL still only allow one player to come back after six weeks, the change is that teams no longer have to designate which player can return when they place him on IR. I've shied away from the designation to return IR just because I feel it would be more confusing than it would be beneficial, and this change kind of makes it even more confusing, so I'm still not sure whether I'm going to add this rule here.

So how does it work now. If you place someone on IR they can come back anytime they are ready?

No, if you place a player on IR they cannot come back on your roster until the next season.
