Speed and Acceleration

How much does acceleration actually matter? What is the difference between a player with 100 acceleration and 50 speed and a player with 50 acceleration and 100 speed. Obviously the latter is faster in the long run but on a 10/20/30/40 yard distance who is faster and when are they equal?

It's essentially a physics calculation - in reality, acceleration is a function of weight and force, here "acceleration" is actually the force part of that equation. So a 180lb player with 100 acceleration will accelerate more quickly than a 300lb player. "Speed" is the speed that a player will stop accelerating, which is also impacted by his weight. Two 200 lb players with the same speed will peak out at the same speed, but may accelerate at different rates. (Fatigue also reduces a player's max speed)

Reviving this thread. How does SP scale by weight and position? For instance, take this scenario:

*190lb WR 1 has 0 SP
*190lb WR 2 has 100 SP

What is the scaling difference between the two WRs in terms of a 40 yard dash. For instance, will WR 2 run the 40 in <4.3 whereas WR 1 will run the 40 in >4.6 or is the change even more drastic than that. (I'm using these numbers as general guidelines from the draft over the past 10 years or so.)

I've been meaning to ask about this fit a while. I'm having a difficult time gauging how wide the range of speed may be between two players. If two guys with the same weight are 20 points apart in speed rating, is the difference negligible?

Most of the time acceleration is going to be more important than speed - speed is basically the velocity that the player maxes out at, acceleration (combined with the player's weight) is how fast he gets there. If acceleration is low then a player will rarely even get to his max speed especially if it is high.

I need to put 40-times on the player cards, that would be a fairly trivial calculation, I just haven't gotten around to it.

Sadly, if you add 40 Times you might as well add 10 Yard Splits (how fast they cover the first 10 in a 40)...

which may then lead to people wondering where the 3 Cone Drill is (a greater measure of agility/acceleration than speed).

Not that I'm opposed to this... just more work on your part.

How hard would a 'STR' measure be, if you used a generic Combine Bench Press to illustrate it?

A 100 STR WR at 186 Pounds might get 15 Reps on 225 (which for a guy that small is good) while you expect the 300 Pound DT with 100 STR to hit 30+ Reps kind of thing.

Maybe Stamina influences these as well, you see a 100 STR DT at 300 Pounds but he's only rocking 25 Reps... he just gets to tired to showcase his full STR potential?

I know, I know... I keep adding things that are exceedingly difficult. :D But I do feel they had value. (Vert is also a very good indicator of Strength, much better for RBs and DBs than Bench, for Explosiveness).

It would be a chore, but I'm sure if you had the time you could do a 'Combine'... maybe even some neat stuff with QBs. Perhaps we could use some kind of System to go to 'Pro Days' to get more information?

I'm just getting into coding, so I know this stuff isn't exactly easy. You've got to be hating my posts. LOL! :D

I think it'd be sweet to have all the combine numbers available for players. It would make the evaluation so much more authentic and fun.

This is actually the main reason I haven't done the 40-times, because while that is an easy formula (and the 10-yard splits would be just as easy), translating attributes to other combine scores - especially strength-related ones - are not nearly as straightforward.

A basic idea would help? Also, I'm not sure if AC is working as explained here. RBs with <50 SP and 100 AC are still only going to average 2.0 YPC as the defense swarms them as they hit the hole. Or is this a byproduct of blocking code?

I've had success with speedy RBs who have 0 or low acceleration. They *seem* to get up to speed OK.

As setherick indicates, I still don't know what the difference is between two speed ratings (setting aside adjustments for weight, acceleration, etc.).
