Authorccurrier's Takes After Round 1:

23. Giants – Evan Engram, TE/WR, Ole Miss: I don’t like this pick. The Giants now effectively have four slot receivers, and passed up Cam Robinson, Forrest Lamp, and Ryan Ramczyk for a player that they didn’t need. Engram has serious speed and is effectively a receiver in the NFL. He can’t play in-line or block well as a TE, but run routes very well, has great hands, and ran a 4.42 at the Combine. He projects to be an H-back or slot receiver that occasionally splits out wide in the NFL. Now, the Giants have Odell Beckham, Jr., who can play on the outside, but is best in the slot, Brandon Marshall, who is the same story, Sterling Shepard, a pure slot receiver, and now Engram. Some of these players aren’t going to be able to see the field now that this selection has been made, which makes it seem like a bit of a waste, to me. If they wanted a TE who could also be a receiving threat (which is something they actually needed), they could have drafted David Njoku.

I don't think it was a big waste, a good TE is still missing in the offense, maybe he is not a good blocker but he still can learn and be better, and we got Rhett Ellison that is a good blocker during the free agency.

OBJ, Marshall, Shepard and Engram can be all in the field in the same time, most of times (too many times) McAdoo used 11 personnel formation, so all can be on the field in that case.

Sorry for bad english, that's not my language

I hate the Giants, but that receiving core looks good. It's either gonna be tops in the league, or implode with Marshall and obj and their personalities. I'm pulling for the latter XD

I'm thinking it bombs since they are a collection of (at this point in their career) great slot receivers. I don't have a lot of faith in OBJ and Marshall is starting to hit the wall. The others are just slot receivers, and Eli is one of the worst starting QBs in the NFL. I just don't see it.

I don't feel like Eli is one of the worst QB in the league, last year was bad for all the offense because McAdoo doesn't have experience as HC, and the OL was bad so there was no help from the running game (not the HB fault imo) and a weak protection for Eli, but more than everything the problem was not the OL, the problem was not on the field but was McAdoo...

McAdoo, as OC with Coughlin as HC and Coughlin's gameplanning led a great offense, so Eli played well even with a bad OL and a struggling running game. McAdoo was a good OC but now he have to get experience and be better as HC because his job is not good.

It was the same with Gilbride, first the offense was more running than passing, and was good enough, but then the offense became more a passing offense, Gilbride that prefer running offense was still the OC and finally the offense became weaker. The fact that the OLinemen was older or retired didn't help too, + the fact that the roster didn't improve with Reese. The fact that finally in 2011 we won the SB with a great passing offense at the end of the season is weird but, I like it lol

So McAdoo have to improve himself or it will be again a long season for us in offense :(

I think Eli regressed last year, too. He wasn't able to make all of the throws that he could in the past. I also think the offense struggled with its identity with McAdoo no longer the OC. Also, last year, the Giants had too many slot receivers and no outside threats besides OBJ. Seriously, while one can argue that a QB can never have too many weapons around him, there's a reason that Victor Cruz was a slot receiver in the first place, and a reason that Sterling Shepard was drafted to be a slot receiver. OBJ was the only one who could threaten on the outside due to his athleticism. Cruz doesn't have the greatest skill set when it comes to athleticism; instead, he always won due to his savvy and agility on the inside, along with his soft hands. Shepard is simply too small to be anything more than a slot receiver. The offense had to struggle with its identity because it's like getting a bunch of 3-techniques, who are great weapons, but not having any 5 techniques or higher to rush the edge. One of the 3-techs can rush the edge on occasion (that would be OBJ), but none of the others can, and there's a limited amount of 3-techs that can fit onto the line at the same time. And if you try o force it to work, then your pass rush becomes a mess. That's sorta like where the Giants are at now, but with even MORE slot receivers than last year. A weapon's a weapon, but there are only so many hands to hold a weapon. You'll have to switch them out in order to use them all, and I'm not sure that a revolving door will exactly help with the offense's stability, even if it's a revolving door full of high-caliber weapons. I think that the Giants should have drafted someone to make the offense more balanced, like Forrest Lamp, Cam Robinson, or Ryan Ramczyk with the 1st rounder, or potentially David Njoku if they wanted to go the TE route (Njoku is rated higher than Engram with pretty much everyone besides the Giants; he can block in the run game, and he's a serious threat in the passing game with his size, naturally amazing athleticism, and plus hands. Engram is very fast, a great route runner, and has great hands, but Njoku was rated higher because of greater size, potential, overall athleticism, and inline traits). If they didn't want to help their run game, then they should have traded down to get an exterior stud like Zay Jones, or gone with someone like JuJu Smith-Schuster or Chris Godwin with their second-round pick. It just seems to have made more sense to do that.

I watched many of the Giants games and every game Eli was getting his receivers killed (something I also bash Tom Brady for because hes the worst QB in the league at doing it) and completely missing them. Theres good reason why OBJ has such a high quantity of spectacular catches and its simply because he has no choice. Eli's accuracy is terrible. Its either amazing catch or no catch. Its been obvious his whole career hence his frequently being a leader in INTs despite a talented cast of receivers who "just don't mesh" and then go on to play extremely solid elsewhere. If you go through Eli's highlights more than any other QB they are going to be difficult catches not perfect dimes and throwing receivers open like other QBs. Eli just gets the benefit of the Manning name and the receivers get blamed.

Eli doesn't fear to make risky passes, so he sometimes throw interceptions. In 2015 he didn't throw INT until the week 6.

I think Eli maybe regressed mentally, there is now some seasons he doesn't have a good protection, he took some hits and has been injured in the last game of 2013 season, even when he is not hit he is under pressure and I think the fact to be always under pressure, game after game, season after season, I think that fact is mentally tiring and he became afraid.

Big Ben, he is one of my favorite QB, he have that kind of pressure, of hits on him and even injuries, and he is the lonely one that it's like he doesn't care and is not afraid and disturbed by that. It's like he doesn't feel pressure and he moves so good in his pocket. I think that guy is very underrated.

I'm not a Steelers fan, but he is VERY underrated. His toughness is legendary. He is the only QB that I see who is willing to throw himself into the fire, will dislocate his throwing shoulder and then play the rest of the game. As a result, though, he misses more time than he should. Sorta like Jordan Reed with the Redskins. RB Matt Jones went down in the Pre-Season with a separated AC Joint, and he missed three weeks. TE Jordan Reed separated his AC Joint in the middle of the Dallas game, and then came back to make 10 catches for 95 yards and 2 TDs in the SECOND HALF.

That's why I like the Gerald Everett pick for the Rams. McVay, their new head coach, was the TE coach at Washington. He became the Offensive Coordinator, and his use of TEs as extreme matchup weapons never leaves a team standing pat over the Redskins. Now, he's the Rams head coach, and he just drafted his new Jordan Reed. The only difference is that Everett is more athletic, had less drops in college, and runs better routes than Reed did coming out. Reed was named to the All-Rookie team. I expect Everett to be similar, but I think OJ Howard will be the All-Rookie TE. Still, Everett is a major mismatch weapon and will do tons for the Rams. McVay has Tyler Higbee to be the Vernon Davis to Everett's Reed. The Rams' offense is about to have a new dimension. Not to mention that I think Cooper Kupp, not Robert Woods, will take the Rams' high volume role that Garcon had in Washington.

But I digress. Eli is a tough QB, Big Ben is tougher, but yes... I will agree that Eli is very tough.
