Player Declining A Contract

I'm pretty certain (though not completely so), that a player won't ever decline a contract offer. Can that be changed?

I just picked up this guy in late free agency:
https://cust33.myfootballnow.com/player/3442

Entering the peak of his career, reasonable WR, probably a good 3rd or 4th guy on the depth chart. Who is now pretty much going to play out the rest of career for the minimum possible salary.

You'd imagine the best course for this guy would have been to decline my contract, or only take a single year deal if one came along in order to put himself in the shop window rather than be a FA. As it is, he may well finish his career having made very little cash (in footballing terms).

I know it's probably fairly deep to try and programme player preferences, but I just thought the above was pretty odd, and a bit of the game that wasn't terribly realistic.

well maybe the reason he decided to join your team was the fact he figures that he could possibly help your team either on the field , off the field , in the locker room or maybe in a trade to better your team.

I think really if anything should be added if a player accepts or a coach accepts a contract is somehow in that contract it tells you why he joined your team to help on the field , off the field , in the locker room , in a trade , he wants to get his first coaching job , he thinks he can bring a winner to your team , etc.

I think the subject loops back into the "market value" conversation that comes up from time to time when people talk about how cheaply they can be resigned by their own teams.

Even if this guy can help me, however he'd label it, he's done it massively below any kind of value, and more importantly, done it for 5 years. That's what I'd like to see addressed.

Even on a "prove it deal" to try and show your worth to other teams taking literally any deal you can get to play, to sign for 5 years is just too much.

then why did you give him a 6 year or 5 year contract then??

Wouldn't it be better to give just a 1 or 2 year contract to him or none at all and problem solved?

I just think maybe somewhat this suggestion you are putting out there is to make sure you don't make the same mistake again or so if you do make a mistake it wont came back to bite you on the backside.

I offered him a 5 year contract because that is the best thing to do as an owner. If I can tie a guy down that can contribute for 5 years for peanuts, why wouldn't I do it? I can cut him for pretty much no dead money as well.

What I'm saying is the game shouldn't let me do it. It's an exploit, I'd say. If I hadn't offered him that contract, I'd hazard a guess someone else would have done so.

In theory, the only person losing out here would be the player, financially most of all. But that kind of thinking doesn't currently exist, financial worth isn't programmed into the decision making process with contracts.

well ok . from my experience when I send someone a contract that is on the free market that I figure I probably should have him on my team I only give them a 2 year contract my reasoning is that if they stink it up their 1st year then I can cut him on his 2nd year or before his 2nd year which in turn I hope it doesn't cost me where it is a salary cap hit.

well if you feel it is a exploit then I would suggest you just tell the admin JDB about it.
Though he may not feel it is a exploit

That was all very kind of you :)

I'm sure JDB is aware of the issue and it is hardly game breaking, just something I'd noticed that I thought might warrant some attention at some point.

And I take your point about a short contract. That is something I would do with most free agents so that I can cut them or extend them if needed. But because this guy accepted a contract for the absolute minimum, I can absorb any decision I make at any point. He's on about 15k a year bonus money, which is a drop in the ocean of the salary cap total. He may as well be giving away his services for free lol!

players DO refuse contracts, all the time.
If a player only gets one offer before the daily turnover then he will accept it, but if he gets multiple offers, he will accept the best one.

Yeah, and that is good.

But if a player got 9 contract offers at the minimum over 5 years, and 1 offer at the minimum over 5 years + $1 dollar more, he'd accept that last offer and would still be on a terrible contract that doesn't reflect his own personal value.

Not a great example as that's not really likely to happen, but you get my point. He'd still be accepting a contract, when really, he should be declining all 10 offers.

Maybe he just wants to play regardless of how large his contract is?
Better than not playing at all.
