I wanted to share some of the ingredients to how I compile the BCS poll. So here goes.
1. Wins and Winning Percentage
2. Win vs Unbeaten (starting in wk5)
Win vs #1 Team (starting wk5)
Win vs #2 Team(starting wk5)
Beat team w/Win Streak > 3(starting in wk5)
Road Win
Win vs Ranked
Win on Road vs #1 or #2 (as an unranked)
Margin of V
3. Loss vs Ranked
Loss vs Ranked & lose @ home
Loss vs Unranked & lose @ home
Loss vs Unranked
Loss vs Team w/L3 Streak or more (Starting in Wk5)
4. Strength of Schedule - This one is pretty cool as it is "alive" throughout the season. Meaning that When the poll came out in week 5, you may have played a team in weeks 1-4 that was undefeated. Which would obviously give you a bump UP in S.O.S. at that point. But lets say that same undefeated team then goes on to be .500 over the next 4 weeks (lose 4 straight), the value you were getting for S.O.S. in week 5 has now lost considerable value, effecting the weighting toward your poll points. So, this metric is somewhat volatile.
5. Some value is put into the BCS from the other two Polls. (Coaches and MFN) but this weighting is minimal and has maybe a 3% effect on your BCS ranking (in comparison to the other metrics listed above.)
Weighting - it is different for different pieces of the data listed above but it is (and has been) fed
across the board for all 32 teams since day 1, into each week's tally.
Not Perfect: I will never claim that it is. But I did put a lot of time and thinking into it to try to make it be as fair as possible. And I did do it for something fun for everyone in the league to enjoy. I hope you do.
Thanks,
B
