DawgPound 2020 preview

Good News:
The Huskies made a second straight bowl game after a solid 13-3 record that included wins over 2 of the final 8 Bowl teams.

We had two All-Americans this season with RB Myles Gaskin (2nd time) and CB Jackie Westfall (1st time). After moving from DT to RDE, Steve Entmen had 21 sacks and 75 hurries. Not quite making All-American, but entering only his 3rd season, has a lot of chances to make the team.

Both Tim Wheeler and Dean Smith caught 74 passes and over 1100 yds.

1st year DT Danny Shelton had a solid 1st campaign with 10 sacks and 49 hurries on his way to an All-Freshman nomination.

Bad News:
While we made our 2nd bowl game, we again had a poor showing, being out coached by Rutgers in every aspect. Dawg fans will be looking for at least a 2nd rd showing this season or the coaching staff will likely be held accountable.

2020 outlook:
The Huskies have only 2 players graduating. Unfortunately, they are both DLineman. The Huskies have already used the past two 1st rd choices on the DLine. While successful picks (Entmen and Shelton), it has left other positions wanting.
QB Joseph London enters his 10th season and his backup Tiffany is entering his 8th. So, we need to find a young QB very soon.
CB Jackie Westfall is entering his final season and needs a draft replacement this upcoming season.
We also have 2 OL entering year 11.

I think I don't HAVE to go DL in the 1st, queue will include QB, CB, OL, DL....so it's nice not to have to overdraft for need as bad as the past two seasons.

2020 draft:

Needs going in: CB, OL, DE, LB (depth)

Rd 1:
While the need for a CB was huge, the choices at my spot were very weak for the 1st rd. We opted to go OL first and selected LT Jeff Pahukoa. An athletic lineman, he lacks the elite pass block ability needed to start at LT. We will send him to camp as a LT in hopes that skill develops. If it does not, he likely becomes the top backup at all 5 positions this year and will slot in where needed down the road. We have a LT graduating this year, so there is tremendous hope he can develop.
(coach's note...the Huskies are one of the heavier run teams in the league, so a strong run block talent carries more weight with us than most teams in MFN)

Rd 2.
Now we had to get creative to get a CB. About 5-6 picks prior to me, Kansas took CB Whitney, who I was starting to have a lot of hope would last to me. But no...Instead, the Dawgs went with a high school LB and plan on converting him to CB. Bert Kidd is 6'1" 231 lbs. Has very good coverage skills and is a good tackler. His speed is not elite, but plays as a CB3 pretty easily. If he can add some speed while dropping weight, he can become a CB2 down the road.

Rd 3.
Having no depth entering the season, the Huskies had to sign a couple transfers. Unfortunately, we failed to coerce the elite, so we added depth. Barney Bassler joins us with a top end pass rush ability in spite of his lack of top speed. We will send him to camp as a RDE. We hope he adds a little run stop ability. He will back up Steve Entmen and fill a nice role for us. I think he also can step back off the line and play a little LB in case of emergency.

Rd 4.
Quality LB are non existent at this point of the draft. I hate to waste bonus money on a 4th rd pick that may not be rostered. So we went safe and added WR Kim Hyde. He will never be a WR1, but slots in as our #4 right now with a chance to be #3. He also has the ability to spell our RB in case of injury.
(coach's note...this likely means a loss of scholarships for 1-2 of our current WR corps)

Day 3 plans:
We need to bring in an athlete that can compete for a LB depth spot. We also would love to bring in two OL for competition. (and to play preseason games to prevent injuries...lol)

Other preseason notes:

DE Sergio Cooper will switch from right to left, at least for camp. This to improve the teams flexibility.

TE Randall Johnson was looking at TE3 and his scholarship is in jeopardy. He will transition to the interior of the OL in an attempt to stay on campus.

After a solid 13 win season, Dawg fans' expectations are slightly subdued this season.

A less than exciting draft was followed by an extremely poor camp. The off season recruiting and draft was not able to yield ANY additions the the starters and offered very little in the way of long term depth.

A surprise cut will be WR Mario Bailey. Bailey was never able to crack the regular rotation and with a lot of WR in camp, the staff chose to revoke his scholarship.

With the improvement the rest of the conference showed as last season progressed, we will be thrilled to make it back to a bowl game.

2020 outlook: Best case scenario? 11-5....An 8-8 record would not shock me.

A 1-1 start is not a big deal either way....but fans are concerned with how the team looks.

After a season with a lot of Heisman talk, QB Joseph London entered his Senior season(s) with a chance to set himself up for the NFL...Unfortunately, after two games, he has managed just 406 yds on barely over 50% comp. There is some talk to giving the younger Ronald Tiffany a chance to make the team his own

QB Ronald Tiffany got his first start last night against Texas and was solid with 340 yds 3 TD. (In 3 quarters basically)

Former starter Joseph London did little to regain trust. Occasionally spelling Tiffany, London managed only 1/8 including a red zone INT on his first pass.

Looking like Tiffany has earned himself at least a couple more starts

I quick shout out to Freshman DE Barney Bassler

His first start of the year in place of the concussed Steve Entmen, and he managed 1 sack and a solid 9 hurries. Nice work young man...

Holy "Yards after catch" Batman.

A couple school records were annihilated this past game against Stanford.

QB Ronald Tiffany
20/26 702 yds and 10 TD...(Previous records were 472 and 5)

RB Myles Gaskin
111 yds rushing is OK...but added 9 rec for 437 yds and 6TD! (previous records 197 yds and 3 TD)
4 of the TD to Gaskin were hot reads...nice to see that work for me.

Dawg fans are estatic to have witnessed the teams first Bowl win.

It comes as a slight surprise...after a very poor draft/training camp, the consensus was that the team had not taken a step forward. After a 1-1 start which saw the benching of starting QB Joseph London (in favor of Ronald Tiffany), and stumbling to a 5-5 record and the possibility of no postseason, Tiffany and the team got hot and has now won 7 in a row.

Playing the Juggernaut that is Notre Dame is a daunting task. As an individual, RB Myles Gaskin has had a little success in the previous two meetings, but our defense has not found a way to slow them down.

Starting DT Danny Shelton and #1 CB Budda Baker are both highly questionable coming in to make the job that much tougher.
