2022 Texas Longhorn Football News

As the 2022 season is now underway, i'd like to introduce to the readers your new Longhorn players.
#14 Carroll McCartney QB A Texas native who was taken 4th overall in the draft. He has a great arm, his passing release is tops, and he is sharp as you would like your Quarterback to be. He has a few concerns. He has very little scrambling skills, when he does have to be mobile, he isn't that fast, and last but not least, he is apt to fumble the football. Hopefully the Texas offensive line can give him the time he needs to deliver the football to his receivers. We are happy to have him in state here in Austin.

#47 John Thompson FB 6'0 225 He is a walk on from the state of North Carolina hoping to make the final cuts for the team. He is a solid size and his skills are average but he plays football with a lot of heart.

#44 William Womble 5'11" 229 5th Round from Spokane, Washington is hoping to beat out Thompson for FB.

#83 Ronald Clower 6'1 193 Miami, Florida native. Transferred here from Stanford. Hopefully he can find his niche here in Texas.

#81 Guadalupe Alexander 6'1 194 Indiana guy, he is in his 5th season at WR. He is not the quickest by any means but his courage and hands are why he is here. He will be on the on sides kick return team.

Garrett Bishop RG 6'4 321 Texas got the big fella in the 3rd round this season. His past is unknown. It is rumored he grew up somewhere on the Texas-Louisiana Border.

Rafael Moahagan 6'3 323 This veteran DT will be with us only for a season as his eligibility is up after this season. We hope to see him gobble up some RB trying to run up the gut on us.

Mike Kidd 6'2 228 from the state of Kentucky, he was picked up in the 6th round. He is listed as a WLB but with Strunk and Banks already at the position, he may play elsewhere in the Defense.

Walter Gillmann FS 5'11 201 quick on his feet but needs to work on his tackling. Hopefully he can be a great player here for us.

After the last season, going 2-14, we still have not won a Division game in my tenure, we are hoping these guys can get us going the right direction. The team has a lot of talent, but so do all the other teams in this league. Were hoping to at least get better. Join us in the turnaround of this football team.

OHIO STATE BEATS TEXAS IN OT 23-17

All we can say is "At least it's pre season".

Carroll McCartney didn't start this game vs Ohio State. Don Anderson, who played pretty well last season considering the teams record got the start. Anderson did well, hitting Jetton on the 1st play from scrimmage for a 75 yard score. McCartney did come in to play later in the game and did well himself, completing his first 7 passes. He was injured in the game though and his mobility is a factor. When he has the time to throw the ball, it's a great sight for Texas fans. All 3 Texas QB's played and all 3 did well. McCartney 9/19 for 175, Anderson 8/12 for 131 and a TD, Dunbar 3/5 for 62 yards and a TD. 9 different players caught passes for Texas.

On defense, rookie DB Walter Gillman played pretty good. Gillman along with DT Briceno, Lowery, and Halter all led with 4 tackles. Banks had an interception. Balzer, Whitlock, and Henderson had sacks. James Strunk in his new position was ineffective.

The Longhorns head to Salt Lake City, Utah to take on the Utes next. A dangerous team in a dangerous environment, the Longhorns better eat their Wheaties.

LONGHORNS STAMPEDE UTES POWWOW

Salt Lake City isn't the easiest place to play for visitors. The altitude, the hostile environment, and the quality football team that calls Salt Lake home are some of the factors. The Longhorns didn't know all that and got the pre season win over the Utes 23-10. With wins scarce here in Texas, we will take it!

The Longhorns led most of the game. In the 3rd quarter, Utah went up 10-6 but Texas put up 17 unanswered. Early in the 4th quarter it looked like Utah was going to score on a long pass but DB Herbert McKnight caught up to the Ute WR and popped the ball loose and it was recovered by Alvardo to stop the threat. Those speedy DB's are nice to have in because any WR will have to catch the ball in stride at full speed to get by them. They may not be the best coverage or tackle players but the quickness makes up for it with plays like that.

Rookie QB McCartney played well again backing up Anderson. McCartney was 6/11 194 yards and a TD. Anderson 11/20 129 yards. McCartney was sacked 5 times but when he had time to throw, he was pretty good. Clower caught 6/125, McLane caught 1/85 and a TD.

On Defense Raul Lewis and Strunk led with 5 tackles a piece. Strunk had a sack as well. The other Texas sacks were from the DT position.

The Longhorns host Rutgers next to finish out the practice games. Then we are on to the Regular season and the rough division teams Texas has to play every year.

LONGHORNS AND THUNDERING HERD MOSH IT UP

Texas and Marshall had themselves a stampede last night in West Virginia and the Longhorns came out on the downside of the event, losing 40-6. Carroll McCartney only threw 1 pick but he didn't have a TD pass.

Carroll McCartney's final line was 17/35 for 302 yards, 6 sacks for -51 yards, 0 TD, 1 Int. he also fumbled the ball twice on sacks.
Andrew Jetton caught 6 for 98 yards. Patchen ran for 21 yards on 11 attempts.

On defense Tomas Pearson led with 12 tackles.

As a team, Texas has the lowest rush attempt per game, yards they are 31st. Turnovers per game they are 3rd with 4.0 per game. Penalty yards per game is high too 42.3 per game.

On D we are 31st with rush yards conceded 156.0 per game. And yards per game from scrimmage 518.0. These are things we need to address and get better at so we don't suffer these kinds of losses here at Texas.

Oklahoma comes up next on the schedule and now would be a great time to have some improvements.

WHAT KIND OF "FOOTBALL" WAS PLAYED?

In a game that was more of a soccer match than a football game FSU beat Texas 9-6. The loss drops Texas to 0-5. All the points were from kicks.

Carroll McCartney only fumbled once in the ballgame. Otherwise he played okay. 12/18 for 176 yards. He was only sacked 4 times for 35 yards lost.

Patchen was 22/49 in a run heavy day.

On defense Raul Lewis had 2 picks and made the players of the week for the league. Congrats to Raul on that. Herbert McKnight also had a pick. Tomas Pearson had 8 tackles to lead in tackling.

Steven Henderson, Feldman, Briceno, Briceneo, Banks and Mills all had sacks as the defense pressured Kelly into 3 picks.

Next up is 0-5 Army. I can't believe Army has not got a win this season. Looks like someone is going to be able to chalk up a win. Unless we tie. Only time will tell.

McCARTNEY GETS FIRST COLLEGE WIN

Carroll McCartney got his 1st career win and Texas got their first win of the season over in state rival A&M. McCartney only fumbled the football away once but did okay other than that. he ended up 7/14 for 143 yards and a TD, no picks. He was sacked twice, and the passer rating was 110.12....not too shabby.

Texas ran the ball a lot Patchen 14/87 yards and Gribble 24/51 TD. Both those guys ran fearlessly. Good Job to the RB's.

On d, Pearson in at CB led with 8 tackles. Julius Mills played like a beast 7 tackles and 3 sacks.

The Longhorns head down to the Florida panhandle to take on the Gators. Let's get some wins and get this team some confidence.

TEXAS PLAYS ANNUAL GAME IN NORMAN
The Longhorns crossed the Red River into enemy territory and were looking to pull off an upset and beat the Sooners. It was not meant to be. Oklahoma piled up 600 yards offense and a 44-10 win over Texas. 220 of those total yards were on the ground. That alone is enough to have any defensive coach cringe. The game was really never a contest. 14-7 was as close as it got when QB Anderson, playing for McCartney, hit Andrew Jetton for a 75 yard TD pass in the 1st quarter.

When asked about McCartneys benching, Texas head coach had this to say, "Earlier in the season, I put the young fella out there when maybe he wasn't ready. He took some shots, threw some bad *****, and fumbled a lot! Now, I see that my sink or swim mentality on the way I played the guy was wrong." McCartney so far has a 50.8% completion percentage and 2,733 yards. 7 TD, 11 INT. He has been sacked 92 times! He has lost the handle on the football a new season record 22 times. A record in the record book you want nothing to do with.

Anderson and Heywood split QB duties and Anderson outperformed Heywood. Anderson was 7/13, 131 yards, 1 TD, and 0 INT. Haywood ended up 7/19 for 74 yards and 2 picks. That game is not good for Heywoods situation here in Texas. Andrew Jetton caught 3 ***** for 97 and a TD. Gribble did bulk of the running 13/18 and Eddie George 2/-2.

On defense, Douglas Porter led with 10 tackles. Mills had a sack and Henderson had a couple of sacks. Pearson had the defenses only interception.

Texas hosts 10-4 Syracuse next then they go to Miami to finish out a long, difficult season with if not the most strongest then pretty close to the strongest strength of schedule. The team is still winless in the division.
