Perfect! Yes, answers my question completely. so if he retires the remaining bnus gets lumped into 1 number that is held against me then i'm free of it after that. So with that being said i'm better off just holding onto him instead of cutting to push the money less and further. Did i get that right?

Ah lol sorry about them. Picked them up in a bad spot and didn't improve them much. Dropped every league other than this one :(

Yeah, you're ideally hoping he doesn't retire, then you can eat a $5-mil hit for the *new* current season (after the season roll-over) and the balance $10-mil will hit next year.
That'll help space it out over an extra year, and I'm sure you're already pretty high dead cap for the *new* season as is, given how much roster-repair it looks like you're working with.

If he retires, or gets cut, or gets traded, it is the same difference. All unpaid bonus gets lumped into dead cap for next season. The only way to get around that is to keep him so you can pay him next season's bonus, which happens at the start of the season. Only if player has no remaining bonus (which can happen if the player is in the last year of his contract, or if he has been traded for, or if he has been claimed off waivers) can you avoid dead cap completely.
