2032 Training Camp

By Lars Bullitt

Very much a roller coaster ride for the Huskies. Including some veterans.

Picks 1 and 3:
I will group them together since they are both RB.
Beno Bryant (1). had an ugly 4/-8 camp with a major hit to fumbling and break tackle. I think I will be moving him to WR on a permanent basis.
I feel OK about this because Corey Dillon (3) was an opposite 9/+4 in camp. His fumble skill needs to mature, but will end up 70+. I will take it.
Unfortunately, he will need to fast track because Nap Kaufman AND his backup both went backward -2 in camp (year 9) and may not make to year 11 before retirement.

2nd rd pick LG Ed Cunningham was only 8/-2 but the -2 came out of pass block and we still will be in the market for a starter next draft.

4th rd pick CB Sidney Jones was a solid 8/+4. As a 4th rd CB, he isn't perfect skill wise, but his speed will play.

5th rd pick WR Kasen Williams was an awesome 10/+10. Not top end speed, but fits into WR2 on my roster right now. I'll take that from a 5th rder.

6th rd K Chuck Nelson 11/+5 Could not have asked for more. 96 acc 100 strength. No kickers in my draft future.

7th rd C William Marks. 4/-1. Took a chance here. He has great athletic numbers and minimal blocking. I want to watch him in preseason to see if he can have ANY success.

Concerns about my 9th year players at RB/CB and LB. Many key players that all jumped to 20% retire. I may be looking at dead cap money in a couple years.

1.22 WR Scott Reed Vol: 14 +4/0 Now 44/81

I'm still a little bummed about the lack of speed, but my struggling QB needs someone who can get open, and he can at least do that. There was QB help on the board here, but I didn't think it was worth a first-round pick.

2.21 LDE Thomas English Vol: 60 +1/-2 Now 42/70

Still a big improvement over Lowenthal. I'd sure like to see more progress from him, though. Maybe preseason will fix that.

3.22 FS James West Vol: 70 +4/-4 Now 38/52

He'll still be useful as a punt blocker, but I was hoping for much, much more. He's fast but not much else.

4.21 MLB Benjamin Johnson Vol: 78 +7/+6 Now 31/70

He'll never be great at coverage, but at least he'll be useful. That's pretty good for fourth round.

5.22 TE Jacob Bell Vol: 16 +6/-1 Now 36/53

He'll be useful as a receiving TE. Now, if only my QB could get it there.

6.21 MLB Ramon Null Vol: 30 +4/-2 Now 26/44

He's also lousy at coverage, so he's not very versatile. He will be a placeholder and no more.

7.22 TE David Hall Vol: 80 +2/-5 Now 24/47

Another placeholder. He missed his chance to be more than that.

I'm still stuck with a lousy QB and aging RB's. I can only hope the injury fairy will be kinder to me this season.

We were looking for a starting RDE and DT, along with a backup QB, by chance all 3 happened!

1.17 RDE Baird +3/+6 the starter we needed
2.16 QB Modlin +6/+1 great #2, could be a starter
3.19 DT Grim +14/+8 will start nicely
4.18 RT Westlund +6/-7 #3
5.17 MLB Lewis +7/+1 good backup
6.16 DT Trumble +7/-1 #3 RDE
7.19 WR Soler +6/+2 #5

Overall not bad. The guys I needed didn't bust and the one's that I took a chance didn't work out.

I'll take 2 defensive studs and a future QB.

1.20 CB Virgil Forrester +12/+6 Future Star for a position that we desperately needed.
2.20 LT Vincenzo Smith +11/+2 Future #1 bookend tackle.
3.20 MLB Roscoe Berrios +3/-12 Convert DL to LB, was hoping for a star but I get a reserve/backup.
4.20 WR Alfred (AC) Slater +9/-3 Young depth at receiver.
5.20 SS Nelson Muniz +6/-1 Convert LB to SS, tackling is pretty bad, but he'll work out as a back-up safety.
6.20 DE Keith Kelly +3/0 Convert LB to DE, might stick at the end of the roster depending on camp performance.
7.20 TE Mike Pearson +9/+7 Late round flyer on a blocking TE.

Really excited about hitting my first 2 picks (both high VOL)! Wasn't able to get the LB's i was looking for (thanks JWS!), but this will go down as a positive draft for BYU. Hit needs, gained speed, and added to roster depth.

The only bad news I got was the unexpected rapid decline by John Houston Jr (CB -3/-3) and Isiah Armstrong (FS -4/-4). Looks like I'm going to eat some major cap space in the very near future, luckily I have their replacements waiting in the wings.

Draftees:
1-10: WLB Mark Fisher (2/-16, 96 Vol) 37/67
2-12: MLB Daniel Potter (7/-11, 80 Vol) 35/58
3-11: MLB Benjamin McCombs (12/2, 16 Vol) 41/76 (change to WLB)
4-10: WR Roderick Stewart (12/-1, 20 Vol) 44/75
5-12: RDE Edgar Speakman (1/-17, 98 Vol) 27/47
6-11: CB Luke Kardos (4/-8, 74 Vol) 34/60
7-10: RB Patrick Canada (10/4, 50 Vol) 38/71

Notes: This Draft was straight terrible, and the high Vol gamble failed. McCombs and Canada will be really nice pieces (though Canada comes into a pretty full RB room). Stewart may find a home here, but low Speed and Pass Catching will hamper his contributions. The others may very well be set adrift if they can't find a more fitting position.

Other Team's Draftees:
RB David Marten (12/4, 44 Vol) 40/74 (Navy's 4-31)

Notes: Looking at the Navy roster (by my ratings), Marten would've come out as the best Future out of their RB stable. But... One man's drop is another man's nice pick-up. I'm sure I'll find a use for him.

UDFAs:
WR Cleveland Royal (3/-6, 86 Vol) 39/61
C Philip Rittenhouse (1/1, 14 Vol) 41/62
RG Kirk Rice (1/2, 60 Vol) 34/67
RT Domingo Oliver (8/5, 60 Vol) 43/65

Notes: I might be able to make something out of the O-Lineman, especially Oliver. I anticipate some shifting around of the backups given the positives that came out of the new group. Another WR flop, but at least this one wasn't a waste of a pick.

Overall: I might have to stop risking high Vols, because this was by far the worst offseason I've had. I managed to scrape together a few pieces, but no one that will likely be more than good backups. Gonna be a long season once more.

Clemson 2032 TC...

Round 1 - #51 Malcolm Belcher FS R 6/-5 40/76 - Bummed, but will split time at LB.
Round 2 - #58 Tom Strickland SLB R 10/2 39/78 - Much needed LB help.
Round 3 - #71 Matthew Shelton RT R 1/-5 54/69 - Was hoping he would be better.
Round 4 - #92 Willie Frizzell LDE R 2/0 43/70 - He will help with pass rushing.
Round 5 - #26 Donald Barr RB R 4/3 34/55 - Boom! Barr will see some action.
Round 6 - #13 Albert Webb WR R 7/-4 43/65 - Will help with run blocking.
Round 7 - #19 Ernest Clark WR R 10/3 36/67 - Will take Webb's space at WR.

Outlook-
Strickland will be a much needed asset at LB. Hopefully, Belcher will not go down much more and can be used in multiple places. The big help is RB Barr. It will be nice for the Tigers not to go into next season's draft looking for depth at RB. If the WR core can make some plays, Clemson should have a good season.

No detailed Training Camp report out of Pasadena. UCLA injected some speed at the skill positions. That was the main goal of the "new look" Bruins and it was accomplished.

Given the state of your roster, I'd try to stay low VOL early in the draft and work on some big swings later on. If you're picking early you should still have some great, safe options that will upgrade your squad and if you can go 33% on the later picks, you'll catch up on the talent front in a few seasons.
