15 Oct, 2017 - Week 7Navy Midshipmen 31, Army Black Knights 10Midshipmen Ground Out Victory Over Black KnightsComing off three straight games which saw the Midshipmen defense surrender an average of 552 total yards and 42 points per game, Head Coach John Dunlap and Defensive Coordinator Gary Kittleson knew that something had to change against arch-rival Army. Led by DE
Doug Harris, the Navy defense responded with arguably their best output this season, holding the Black Knights to less than 300 yards total offense and 10 points to help secure Navy's win 31-10.
"We've been playing some good offensive football teams, but we haven't played well over the last few games. I haven't put my guys in a position to be successful enough," said Kittleson. "We needed a shot in the arm, and hopefully this can be the catalyst."
Aside from the defense, Navy also relied more heavily on their rushing attack after watching QB
James Sherwood put up gaudy passing numbers over the past 3 weeks. Sherwood would still have a great game, finishing 17-20 for 227 yards, but it was
Tommy Rodgers who led the way on the ground for the Middies.
"Sherwood has been amazing for us this year, and he'll continue to be amazing for us as the season progresses," said Coach Dunlap. "We just wanted to take some pressure off of him and become a little more balanced in our attack this week."
Rodgers and company responded with over 250 yards rushing, a trend that Coach Dunlap hopes can continue next week against the Stanford Cardinal.
