Next Week: vs. Army (3-3)

15 Oct, 2017 - Week 7

Navy Midshipmen 31, Army Black Knights 10

Midshipmen Ground Out Victory Over Black Knights

Coming off three straight games which saw the Midshipmen defense surrender an average of 552 total yards and 42 points per game, Head Coach John Dunlap and Defensive Coordinator Gary Kittleson knew that something had to change against arch-rival Army. Led by DE Doug Harris, the Navy defense responded with arguably their best output this season, holding the Black Knights to less than 300 yards total offense and 10 points to help secure Navy's win 31-10.

"We've been playing some good offensive football teams, but we haven't played well over the last few games. I haven't put my guys in a position to be successful enough," said Kittleson. "We needed a shot in the arm, and hopefully this can be the catalyst."

Aside from the defense, Navy also relied more heavily on their rushing attack after watching QB James Sherwood put up gaudy passing numbers over the past 3 weeks. Sherwood would still have a great game, finishing 17-20 for 227 yards, but it was Tommy Rodgers who led the way on the ground for the Middies.

"Sherwood has been amazing for us this year, and he'll continue to be amazing for us as the season progresses," said Coach Dunlap. "We just wanted to take some pressure off of him and become a little more balanced in our attack this week."

Rodgers and company responded with over 250 yards rushing, a trend that Coach Dunlap hopes can continue next week against the Stanford Cardinal.

Off Player of the Game: RB Tommy Rodgers 11 carries, 110 yards, 3 TDs / 4 rec, 53 yards
Def Player of the Game:: DE Doug Harris 4 tckls, 4 sacks, 5 qb hurries
Navy Play of the Game: Rodgers breaks into the open for a 72 yard scamper to put the Middies up 7-0 - https://ncaa-football.myfootballnow.com/gamecenter/view/176#32516

Next Week: vs. Stanford Cardinal (0-7)
Navy looks to put together two straight weeks of success as they host the winless Cardinal. Navy's success will depend on how they contain RB Ivan Thibodaux. They do just enough to secure their 3rd win of the season... Navy 28, Stanford 20.

22 Oct, 2017 - Week 8

Navy Midshipmen 37, Stanford Cardinal 17

Sherwood to Bright Propel Midshipmen to Second Straight Win

Off Player of the Game: QB James Sherwood 16-26, 385 yds, 4 TDs, 1 INT & WR Richard Bright 4 rec, 245 yds, 3 TDs
Def Player of the Game: DE Samuel Hawkins 5 tckls, 2 scks, 5 qb hurries
Navy Play of the Game: Sherwood stays calm under pressure to deliver a strike to Bright to put the Middies up by 20 with 5 minutes left in the 4th https://ncaa-football.myfootballnow.com/gamecenter/view/192#35677

Next Week: vs. Mississippi Rebels (2-6)
The Middies look to continue their recent success against an Ole Miss team that narrowly lost to Army last week. If Ole Miss can take care of the football, it raises their chances... but Navy does just enough to escape with a 3rd straight victory 36-24.

Navy Midshipmen 49, Mississippi Rebels 10

Midshipmen Cruise to 3rd Straight Win

Off Player of the Game: QB James Sherwood 18-21, 309 yds, 2 TDs
Def Player of the Game: CB Charlie Andre 5 tckls, 2 INTs, 3 passes defended
Navy Play of the Game: Sherman to Bright strikes again on a 75 yard TD to put Navy up a comfortable 28-3 in the 3rd https://ncaa-football.myfootballnow.com/gamecenter/view/198#36792

Next Week: at Michigan Wolverines (1-6-2)
Despite a 3 game win streak, Navy must remain focused if it wants to beat a Michigan team whose talent hasn't quite translated into wins this season. The Wolverines have played two top 12 teams close in the past couple of weeks featuring a balanced attack between QB James Sousa and RB Edward Clark. Defensively, the Midshipmen are coming off one of the better performances but haven't had a lot of success this season. This one will be a high scoring affair, but Navy narrowly escapes Ann Arbor 41-38.

Next Week: vs. #5 Marshall Thundering Herd (9-1)
Marshall is coming off their first loss of the season to Army, while Navy looks to rebound from their loss to Michigan. Turnovers and special teams were the difference in the first meeting between these two teams, with Marshall coming out on top 44-35 in Week 5. Navy won't be able to keep up with the #5 team in the nation and will lose 41-26.

Navy Midshipmen 25, Marshall Thundering Herd 17

Midshipmen Topple #5 Marshall

Off Player of the Game: K Joseph Brewer 4-4 FG (long of 46), 1-2 XP
Def Player of the Game: DE Samuel Hawkins 3 tckls, 2 scks, 6 qb hurries
Navy Play of the Game: QB Sherwood stays calm under pressure and delivers a strike to Gregory Ho at the back of the end zone to put the Middies up 16-3 https://ncaa-football.myfootballnow.com/gamecenter/view/233#43368

Next Week: vs. #5 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (9-2)
Similar to last week, the Midshipmen get a top 5 team coming off a loss at the hands of Army. Notre Dame dominated the Middies in Week 2 in almost every aspect of the game, winning easily 36-19. Navy has improved since then, but not enough to overcome the gap in athleticism. Notre Dame wins, again in convincing fashion 31-16.

Midshipmen Blanked by Fighting Irish

Off Player of the Game: None, it was abysmal
Def Player of the Game: DT Paul Howard - 6 tckls, 3 qb hurries, 2 scks
Navy Play of the Game: Not really one specific play, but a shout out to my defense for somehow holding Notre Dame to 1 offensive touchdown and less than 100 yards rushing (2.86 ypc)

Next Week: vs. #10 Washington Huskies (7-4-1)
Navy's offense looks to try and get back on track after a pitiful performance against Notre Dame. Washington looks to put together a win streak after beating Army 23-20. Officially eliminated from the bowl season, Navy will try their hardest to be the spoiler but alas... Washington wins a close one 27-24.

Your offense was solid, especially in the first half. A little trouble in the red zone. But I could never quite get to your QB. I think I had 25 hurries without a sack.
