TENNESSEE TOO MUCH FOR TEXAS TO HANDLETennessee was in Austin last night to take on the struggling Longhorns. Aside from Andrew Jetton and Andrew Patchen, the Longhorns aren't getting any results. The Volunteers on the other hand are 2 time league champs and ranked in the top 5.
Tennessee came out and established an early 17-0 lead before Patchen broke a run to make it 17-7. Then late in the 2nd quarter, with Tennessee up 27-7 Patchen broke another run of 11 yards to make it a 27-14 game and still some optimism as they took that score into the locker room.
But in the 2nd half the Tennessee defense got into the scoring as Keith Avilia took a Jose Griffin pass to the end zone for a pick 6. All optimism was taken away on that play and the Longhorns were in "let's get this over" mode. The final was Tennessee Volunteers 44 Texas Longhorns 27.
Tennessee had 27 first downs, 641 yards from scrimmage, and 284 yards rushing. All three of those stats need to be at least cut in half for Texas to even have a chance to win.
Texas had a respectable offensive day. 516 yards, 113 rushing, 403 passing.
Jose Griffin went 21/41 418 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT. Andrew Jetton had his usual big numbers with 10 receptions for 204 yards and 1 TD. Jetton is one of the leagues top receivers this season. Patchen had a good day running the ball 16/115, 2 TD's.
On defense, there is a lot to work on in practice this week. Tomas Person led the D with 8 tackles. Herbert McKnight had a pick and forced a fumble. Raul Lewis also had a pick.
Things don't get much easier this week with Florida St. up on the schedule. The last time Texas played these guys it was a pre season game but it was a game that we remember. Now is the time for reckoning of any kind to take place as FSU is 1-4. So let's see how the Longhorns come out and play this week.
