Round 1, 5th Overall
MLB Steven Williams - 5 Star Recruit - Junior

Round 2, 60th Overall

RT Edmond Sanchez - 5 Star Recruit - RS Freshman

The first three selections all came on the defensive side of the ball. These three upperclassmen will be the face of Hurricane football for the near future. The first day finished with red shirt freshman RT Edmond Sanchez. Blessed with raw talent, Sanchez has the potential to be one of the best linemen in Hurricane history. Fans will surely be watching his progress intently!

Allocation Draft, Day 2: Miami Hurricanes

Round 5, 133rd Overall
FS Alex Johnston - 4 Star Recruit - RS Sophomore

Round 6, 188th Overall
WLB Morris Newman - 4 Star Recruit - Junior

Round 7, 197th Overall
DT Danny Cohen - 4 Star Recruit - Junior

Round 8, 229th Overall
RT Mark Dunnigan - 4 Star Recruit - Freshman

Day 2 was almost a mirror image of Day 1 with three defensive players and OT joining the Miami roster. The addition of Mark Dunnigan at RT will see Edmond Sanchez moving over to LT. Danny Cohen may also be shedding his DT role and moving to the outside.

With two days of signings in the books, the 'Canes sport a solid foundation with two D-Linemen, two Linebackers, two players in the secondary, and the bookends of the O-Line. It is evident that the Miami war room had a gameplan and stuck to it. Spirits are high on South Beach and the fans are eagerly awaiting to see how the 'Canes approach the days ahead and flesh out the squad even more!

With the Hurricanes signing 46 players to the squad, here is our first look at the roster:

QB: Two serviceable QBs that are nothing spectacular. Both are pocket passers with limited mobility with decent, but not great, arm strength and accuracy. Both are upper classmen, look for the U's scouts to be recruiting at the position in the next few off-seasons.

Backfield: While the HBs may not be stellar, they all fit a prototype. The three HBs all have good speed and can catch the ball out of the backfield. A red shirt sophomore and a freshman provide stability at the HB position for the future, while the upcoming season should feature one-star recruit Jeffrey Santacruz. The 'Canes sport two solid FBs who can handle themselves in both run and pass blocking.

Tight End: The immediate starter is two-star recruit David Scott. Quick with good hands, he is purely a receiving threat as his blocking skills leave a lot to be desired. Waiting in the wings, however, is red shirt freshman Courtney Robinson. Robinson is slow as molasses, but shows promise as an excellent blocker for the future.

WR: Three red-shirt freshmen, a freshman, and a sophomore... 'Canes fans will get to know this receiving corps. Leading the group is three-star recruit Allan Hudak. The 'Canes scouts believe that he will exceed expectations and be a legitimate threat in the vertical game.

O-Line: The 'Canes recruited the position heavily. Sporting a pair of five-star recruits and a trio of four-star recruits, the 'Canes wanted to give their offense the tools it needs to move the ball. These studs are a season, or two, away from realizing their potential so they will be playing behind their "game ready" counterparts. Though these starters may be ready to play, they are nothing special and merely waiting to be replaced.

Overall, the offense looks pretty bland, but has the promise of becoming competitive in future seasons.

D-Line: Just one look at DT Doinald Vann, and opposing players should tremble in fear. Standing 6'2" and weighing over 300 pounds, he is surprisingly fast and will be looking to make his mark in the ACC. The 'Canes will be fielding a solid group of defensive linemen and will be looking to disrupt opposing offenses.

LB: The middle of the field belongs to Steven Williams. This man is a beast and will be dominating box scores week in and week out. The rest of the players at the position are more than adequate and look to be a solid group of players.

Secondary: A lackluster group with one shining star, four-star recruit CB John Real. While the corps may not be star-studded, they can hold their own and will make their fair share of plays.

Despite the mediocrity in the secondary, this 'Canes defense is a force to be reckoned with. Opposing teams will be under a lot of pressure and there a players at every level that will make them pay the price for errors.

Special Teams: K Paul Stanley and P Roy Moore are both four-star recruits and boast an accuracy that is unmatched in the NCAA. This is one area that does not need improvement, though Moore will be graduating after the season and need to be replaced next year.

While the 'Canes definitely have some needs, they look to be a competitive bunch and should be contending for the ACC crown in 2017.

University of Miami Hurricanes Training Camp Report

With the Hurricanes training camp drawing to a close, we have a better feel for the squad than just numbers on paper. The 'Canes coaching staff put their players through their paces and a few performances are worthy of note.

Red shirt freshman William Castille put in a solid performance and has edged out Jesse Hoppe as the starting center, though the red shirt senior (Hoppe) will be handling the long snapping duties.

Freshman HB Steven Puryear showed great quickness and has a good grasp of the playbook, though he will start the season buried on the depth chart. Given a season or two, Puryear has shown signs of becoming the running back of the future for the 'Canes.

Red shirt sophomore FB Lowell Scott showed significant improvement and will lead the way for Puryear in seasons to come. Senior Gregory Holton still looks to be the frontrunner for the starting nod, but the future is definitely Scott's.

While most of the roster performed to expectations, there were a couple of disappointments, but none greater than senior CB Manuel Crespo. Crespo got crossed up in drills and tripped over his own feet not once, but twice. While some might chalk it up to nervous jitters, he didn't take kindly to the good-hearted jibs that a few of the players threw his way. Hurling his Gatorade bottle at John Real didn't earn him any favors and it wouldn't be surprising to see him off the roster by season's end.

Not a lot of surprises were had, and the 'Canes coaching staff were pretty happy with that. Up next for the Hurricanes is an exhibition match against the USC Trojans where we will get to see the team in action.

The Miami Hurricanes hosted the USC Trojans for their first of four scrimmages before the 2017 season kicks off.

In the first half the Hurricanes dominated the Trojans, tallying five sacks and allowing the visitors just two net yards of offense. The Hurricanes pulled their starters after the first half, but even the second string defense dominated. When the final whistle blew, the Trojans had accumulated a paltry 100 net yards on offense, an average of 1.67 yards per play, and eleven less minutes of possession than their host.

The Hurricanes offense wasn't anything special, but they got the job done. They did turn over the ball twice, but gave K Paul Stanley five opportunities for field goals - which he converted (the longest of which was 54 yards). The 'Canes did find the end zone once when HB Jeffrey Santacruz punched the ball in from two yards out. The touchdown scoring drive was set up by a MLB Steven Williams interception which gave the offense a short field of only 20 yards.

Notable Performances:
DT Donald Vann: 6 Tackles, 2 Sacks
MLB Steven Williams : 4 Tackles, 2 Sacks, 1 INT
K Paul Stanley: 5/5 FG (long = 54 yards), 1/1 XP

Next up for the Hurricanes is a trip to Washington, as they take on the Huskies. Five players will not be travelling with the team, as injuries will keep them sidelined, something that the 'Canes hope will not become a trend.

OA: Hey there, Orlando Alzugaray here on WQAM sports talk radio. With us, on the phone is Miami Hurricane's coach, Joseph Graham. Joe, thanks for joining us.

JG: Good to be here.

OA: After such a dominant defensive performance in your first scrimmage, you allowed Washington to gain over 500 yards and put up 56 points against you.

JG: Is there a question in there somewhere?

OA: Well, what are your thoughts?

JG: We lost, but it was only a scrimmage. I'm happy that we came out of it with minimal injuries and we can get straight to preparing for our next game. Even though we lost, there were some good things to take away from it.

OA: Like what?

JG: Well, Stanley was perfect again with three field goals and three extra points. Two of those field goals were from over 50 yards. Hudak really made a name for himself and may have taken over the number one receiver slot. Vann had another solid game, and actually our defensive line, as a whole, played well.

OA: How is this result going to affect you against Cal?

JG: We'll review some film, make adjustments, and come prepared. The result won't affect us, but we will make appropriate changes and see how that translates on the field. They've got a strong defense over there, I can guarantee you that there won't be 86 points on the board. This should be a defensive battle, and we're looking forward to it.

OA: Weatherford is listed as probable, will he see playing time or will you be giving him more time to heal?

JG: Right now, it's a game time decision. Neck injuries are serious and our players' health is a priority. But, if he's ready to go, he'll be out there. We definitely want to get our #1 back some touches, but we also want to make sure that he's ready when the games count.

OA: Do you think the 2,500+ mile flight contributed to your loss?

JG: You can't rule anything out, but it was not a MAJOR contributing factor. These things are part of what scrimmages are about. You want to evaluate talent in a game scenario, you want to try different wrinkles in your playbook, and you want to get the guys' conditioning up. It's part of the process and even though the game didn't end in our favor, there was a lot to take away from it.

OA: Well, thanks for joining us and good luck in your next match.

JG: Thanks Orlando, catch you next time.

Miami's Ferocious Front Seven

... you've been warned!

In the third scrimmage game for Miami (vs. Cal), the 'Canes defense was on display. Of Cal's 15 drives, 10 resulted in 3-and-outs, two resulted in turnovers (fumbles), and one ended with a safety. Cal was 0 for 16 on 3rd down and could not find room to run against the front seven of Miami. In fact, their rushing total for the game was -28 yards, with no Cal back ending with positive yardage and the longest run was for four yards.

Cal QBs combined for 97 yards and were sacked eight times. Miami also dominated time of possession, despite putting the ball on the ground five times and losing four of those fumbles. Miami's offense was surprisingly effective (besides the turnovers) against a strong Cal defense. The 'Canes tallied 448 yards and only allowed four sacks. Miami visited the red zone five times and came out with points on all five (3 FG, 2 TD). 'Canes K Paul Stanley was perfect, once more, bringing his pre-season total to 11/11 FG and 7/7 PAT.

Taking this scrimmage 32-3, the 'Canes are preparing for their final scrimmage (@Iowa) before the NCAA 2017 season kicks off. Four players will not be making the flight, resting in hopes to be healthy enough for the season opener. There is a lot to be excited about on South Beach, especially on the defensive side of the ball. The 'Canes offense is starting to come around and when they finally click on all cylinders, this team will be a force to reckon with.

Notable Players:
QB Daniel Yazzie: 20/32 - 333 yards - 2 TD - 0 INT
K Paul Stanley: 3/3 FG - 2/2 PAT
WLB Morris Newman: 7 Tackles - 1 Sack
MLB Steven Williams: 4 Tackles - 3 Sacks - 1 Safety

With all four scrimmages complete (scrimmage four recap will come tomorrow) and the 'Canes ready to suit up for NCAA Week One Kickoff, kicker Paul "The Star Child" Stanley was named Miami "Player of the Pre-Season"

The seventh kicker selected overall, Paul Stanley was selected in the 23rd round and four kickers would be selected before the Hurricanes drafted again. The red shirt senior was a four-star recruit with a strong leg and near-perfect accuracy.

In four scrimmages, Stanley was perfect on all of his kicks. 13 FGs (11-30 yds.: 5, 31-40 yds.: 4, 41-50yds. : 1, 51+ yds.: 3) and 10 PATs
