First Round Draft Review

By slowtospeak
5/16/2020 8:46 pm
I have the proverbial face for radio, and I'm really terrible at talking too, so this blurb is all I can do. I promise to know just as much as the "experts" who do draft reviews in real life (read: nothing at all!)

1.1 Utah Utes
RB/WR Douglas Benn
5'10'' 213 lbs.
No doubt he's a terrific player, but could a team with so many needs afford to make a luxury pick? If this guy could be traded, the pick would make a lot more sense, but that's not the case. As it is, he's sure to be a dominant runner, but blocking for him will be a constant struggle.
Grade: B-

1.2 Tennessee Volunteers
SS Bruce McDonnell
5'11" 212 lbs.
Though they were faced with a bit of a head-scratcher, tha Volunteers recovered nicely and made a terrific pick. He will be able to run down speedy receivers and also cover the monster tight ends that are likely to come his way. Additionally, like Benn could/should have done, he fills a position of dire need.
Grade: A

1.3 Army Black Knights
FS James Johnson
6'0" 242 lbs.
Though I believe in this guy, and he's no doubt needed, there is always a risk involved with position conversions. The Knights could have safely improved themselves at cornerback just as easily. He's already fast and he's going to get faster, but there's more volatility here than I'd like.
Grade: B+

1.4 Miami Hurricanes
TE/RB Roger Havens
6'3" 256 lbs.
Speaking of position conversions, this one's a doozy! This pick feels like a giant reach in order to fill a huge need. Perhaps improving themselves at safety might have been a better choice. This guy, or someone better than him, might have been around for the second pick.
Grade: C

1.5 Syracuse Orange
DT Damon Marquess
6'3" 298 lbs.
We are starting to get into teams which are not faring so badly. The Orange went in to this draft without lots of dire needs, and this guy fit the bill. It is extremely unlikely that he'd still be around for the next pick, so the Orange can be excused for reaching a little bit. Normally a DT would need to be really special to warrant a pick like this, but in the light of other choices, this pick seems understandable.
Grade: B+

1.6 Ohio State Buckeyes
CB Eric Myers
5'11" 204 lbs.
The Buckeyes gladly jumped on some questionable decisions above them to grab a player they should not have expected to get. He's blindingly fast, and he should not have fallen this far.
Grade: A

1.7 Washington State Cougars
MLB/CB Frank Trevino
The upside of this player, and the speed, is indeed compelling. The problem I have with this pick is, it is just as likely to bust as boom, and the downside is disaster, especially at CB. For goodness' sake, move this guy back to linebacker (WLB maybe?) so that you are not wasting the run defense, and so you still have something worthwhile if the not-entirely-unanticipated happens!
Grade: B-

1.8 Arizona Wildcats
MLB Keith Magruder
This is a bit of a luxury pick the way it stands, but perhaps Magruder can be moved to WLB if he works out. I like this a little better than the previous pick because the downside is not so dire. I dislike this because the upside duplicates a player this guy already has.
Grade: B

More to come, because my poor fingers are tired!

1.9 Florida State Seminoles
RG Colin Blackmon
6'1" 330 lbs.
Given how this draft is going, I'm quite all right with an offensive lineman being taken this early. I praised this pick when it came along. In retrospect, however, I would have preferred someone who could be moved to tackle.
Grade: B

1.10 Stanford Cardinal
WLB Mark Fisher
6'0" 246 lbs.
He's too slow! The speed limitation overpowers any redeeming qualities he might have. He will be a liability in coverage anywhere he's put.
Grade: D

1.11 Florida Gators
LG Cameron Moore
6'6" 323 lbs.
He's all right where he is, but he could also be moved to RT. He will be an ace blocker for both the run and the pass, and the Gators should want to use him sooner rather than later. If any offensive lineman is worth a pick like this, it would be him.
Grade: A-

1.12 Northwestern Wildcats
MLB Thomas Novak
6'1" 250 lbs.
There's no way you could have a MLB who's terrible at zone. He is fast, and maybe you could get away with moving him to WLB or SLB, but then he's not worth a first-round pick.
Grade: D

1.13 Georgia Bulldogs
DT Chester Callaway
6'3" 304 lbs.
He's a dominant defender at a position of need, so there's nothing not to like about this pick.
Grade: A

1.14 Alabama Crimson Tide
RDE Bradley Berrios
6'5" 273 lbs.
He's not quite as dominant a defender as Callaway, but the need is still there, and how.
Grade: B+

1.15 Washington Huskies
RB James Sweeney
5'10" 211 lbs.
They filled a coming need, and they also screwed Oregon, which is a nice bonus. They could have helped *themselves* a little better by taking a WR, but by itself, this wasn't bad.
Grade: B+

1.16 Texas Longhorns
RB Antony Jeffries
5'11" 223 lbs.
Joining the merry dogpile. WR, DE, or OL might have been better choices, but they thought the mini-run was more important. Their fans will be asking hard questions about what might have been, and team leadership will deserve those questions.
Grade: C

re: "could have helped themselves by picking a WR".....

Sweeney will likely play 2 seasons at WR before taking over for Kaufman. (Barring injuries)

I wouldn't pretend I could read your mind. I'm sure lots of other people have secret reasons, too, which I'll never know.

Nice job with these S2S! I like the direct feedback, can’t wait for the second half of the picks.

1.17 Kansas Jayhawks
RDE Jorge Baird
6'4" 280 lbs.
Another exact fit for a position of need. He will probably play anyway if he busts, because his competition is so bad.
Grade: B+

1.18 Auburn Tigers
RG Brian Garten
6'5" 319 lbs.
Another need pick; he's a much better blocker than any of the incumbents. My guess is, he'll start right away.
Grade: A-

1.19 Notre Dame Fighting Irish
TE Christopher Sheppard
6'3" 259 lbs.
He's not the sexiest pick, but he is a surefire starter at a position that tends to age badly. Lack of choice probably had a lot to do with this pick.
Grade: B+

1.20 BYU Cougars
CB Virgil Forrester
6'0" 204 lbs.
BYU really, really needs this guy, but it's always a little bit touchy when you're depending on a guy to boom. It's pretty hard to doubt this pick, but it's far from a sure thing. Maybe they could increase their odds by cutting some of the fat.
Grade: B

1.21 Oklahoma St. Cowboys
WR Walter Surtain
5'10" 182 lbs.
This guy was really starting to stick out on the draft board. Even though OKSU needs a receiver like a hole in the head, they grabbed him, and it's not hard to see why. Do they know they broke my heart? Naah, they probably didn't care. At least I can say that I have good taste.
Grade: B+

1.22 Oregon Ducks
WR Scott Reed
5'10" 197 lbs.
The thought of having somebody dangerous on the other end of the dreaded FL Hitch play might have been exciting, but those plans went up in smoke with the previous pick. The Ducks settled on a backup plan that wasn't terrible, but it wasn't as good as it might have been. They needed a WR in the worst way. Also, ace KR Ziggy Xang is getting a little long in the tooth, and speed merchants tend to age badly. The pick makes a pedantic kind of sense, but it is not as bold as some.
Grade: B

1.23 UCLA Bruins
CB Tyrone Ault
5'11" 232 lbs.
An erstwhile linebacker with near-elite cover skills, Ault will gain near-elite speed if he loses some weight. FS may be the way to go for him, because those are rare, and it is a way for his tackling ability to still count. If you leave him at linebacker, his speed will be good but not great. Finding a way to use him will be a problem, but it is a problem anyone would like to have. At this point in the draft, coming up with a potential star is a real steal.
Grade: A

1.24 LSU Tigers
CB Joe Goodall
5'11" 214 lbs.
He has elite coverage skills, but speed will always be a problem for him, and it will be worse if you move him to linebacker. Probably you could move him to safety, let him do his thing, and just tolerate the occasional failure.
Grade: B

Sorry, it's past my bedtime! Big dogs tomorrow! ;)

1.25 USC Trojans
LDE Leroy Smith
6'3" 284 lbs.
There were not a lot of choices, and they certainly needed this guy. I'm starting to see why DE's are so hard to get.
Grade: B+

1.26 Clemson Tigers
FS Malcolm Belcher
5'11" 213 lbs.
His speed is a little short, so I'm not sure how sound he'll be. Still, what can you do? He might have been a converted linebacker, but even then he doesn't have much weight to lose. This team had a big need at cornerback depth. Maybe that might have been more useful.
Grade: B-

1.27 South Carolina Gamecocks
FS John Warren
6'1" 210 lbs
He has high volatility, but at least he has a chance to be good. A known quantity isn't worth very much if you know the quantity sucks.
Grade: B

1.28 Rutgers Scarlet Knights
LB/CB Paul Henderson
6'3" 262 lbs.
Maybe he's just trying to make this player faster, because he makes no sense at CB. Moving him back to LB gives him a chance to help.
Grade: B

1.29 Texas A&M Aggies
RT Kermit Perez
6'3" 303 lbs.
Heading off a coming need is not a bad thing. Incumbent Billy Venable is getting pretty old, and backup Sam Shepard isn't very good. By the time this guy can play, he will be needed.
Grade: B+

1.30 Michigan Wolverines
TE John Miller
6'2" 236 lbs.
A backup TE? Really? FB makes a lot more sense for him, after the run blocking comes along a little bit. This reeks of a backup plan, since this team really needs help at OG and DT.
Grade: C

1.31 Navy Midshipmen
DT Kenneth Jenkins
6'4" 288 lbs.
I'm not as high on him as some other people might be, because I think his strength is middling for a DT. At this point, he makes sense. Perhaps the previous team could have gone this direction.
Grade: B

1.32 Oklahoma Sooners
C John Evans
6'2" 297 lbs.
A center might be expensive, but not having one is more expensive still. Ball security might not be what I'd like, but he'll put a stop to the jailbreak pass rushes for sure. He might not be ready to play right away, but a guy like this is a good thing to have.
Grade: B+

Maybe I could come back after camp to see how these guys really did.

Edited: I wasn't done!

I would love to see this done again for the draft we are currently doing.
