The season has ended for this Hawkeyes team that surged in the second half of the season but came up a couple wins short of a bowl bid. It was a tough season for this group as they had a find a new identity when the run game just would not get going like it did last season. Unfortunately, it just took too long to discover this new identity.
However, the team is encouraged by what they did in the second half of the season and should look to build on that next season. They ended the season in spectacular fashion with a convincing over FSU in an unusual game. Here are some of those stats:
Points
Iowa: 43
FSU: 27

Iowa: 11
FSU: 7
There were no return TDs

Iowa: 28/41 for *** yards, 2 INTs, and 6 TDs

Iowa ran the ball 30 times for 32 yards.......
FSU had 0 runs
in a game with 9 INTs, no individual defender was responsible for more than 1.
Iowa's only fumble came on an interception.
FSU only fumbled once too.
On the season, Iowa had a few players with very healthy stat lines:
To start,
WR Steven Gartman had a terrific season, especially after Iowa decided to pass much more. He had 109 receptions for 1,814 yards and 19 TDs. This was good enough for MFN to name him a First Team All-American (not voted on by coaches). Interestingly, he also was 1/1 on XP tries and had 1 kickoff that went 58 yards.
Next we have
QB Thomas Brown who was throwing to Gartman so much, and rightfully so. He ended the season 351 of 580 (60.5%) for 5,181 yards, 39 TDs, 17 INTs, and a rating of 99.93. It likely won't earn him any season awards, but it was a great season for him nonetheless.
On the defensive side,
CB Joseph Lui had a strong season. He recorded 92 tackles, allowed a catch percentage of 43.2, and had 6 INTs.
LB James Barragan also had a solid season as he recorded 78 tackles, 4 sacks, allowed 39.7% pass completion,. and had 3 INTs.
As for pass rushers, Iowa had four players do pretty good in this department with three of them hitting double digits:
DT Robert Murphy: 62 tackles, 14 sacks, and 36 hurries
DE Jose Vickers: 39 tackles, 12 sacks, and 28 hurries
DT Steve Bass: 58 sacks, 10 sacks, and 29 hurries
DE Phillip Massey23 tackles, 8 sacks, and 8 hurries. Massey only played in 11 games.
