This is the 5th "recruitment period" since allocation. Each of the past 4 seasons I have drafted positional need in the 1st rd. DE Steve Entmen and DT Danny Shelton have worked out nicely. LG Jeff Pahukoa will be hard pressed to keep his scholarship through his senior season (He got a couple extra years when I restructured his contract). And LB Dave Hoffman will be no better than a backup.
So, this season I wanted two things: 1) A pick that doesn't bust and 2) Best player available. It would be a bonus if I got those things in a position of need.
So, the 1st rd brought me
RB Ed Dalton. RB was hardly a position of need, but my top two WR are in year 9 and 10. One thing holding be back when bowl games come around is a lack of big plays in the pass game. Dalton lacks top end speed, but his ball carry and break tackle skills should give him solid YAC numbers. I am torn between a permanent position change or not, as Dalton may serve well back at RB the 2nd half of his career. But a move to WR and the drop in weight may add to his speed.
Dalton comes to camp with a volatility of 2, so a bust is not likely. Plus, throw in the fact that Sloth's mock draft had him #8, and I feel like I was able to add talent to my team. Hopefully, the next few rounds prove as positive.
Rd 2
CB Joseph PearceAfter taking a totally safe player in round 1, The Dawgs took a bigger risk with their 2nd round recruit. A Safety in High School, he has a much higher ceiling as a CB. 88 in volatility means high risk, but as long as he can maintain his speed/acc in the 75 range, he fits well as the CB2 on the team.
Rd 3
Another big gamble....The Huskies bring in
RT Gerardo Taylor.
Taylor is definitely not a prototypical tackle in this league with a very low pass block skill. But the Huskies are hoping their coaches can pull of a miracle and turn his 98 volatility into gold.
Of the linemen left at this point, Taylor offered the best combo of Speed/Acc/Strength. Already a solid run blocker, I am only counting on the one key category.
If he does not boom, he likely won't survive camp. But I knew a higher ceiling was not out there.
Rd 4
QB Robert VidesMy third high volatility player in a row. I was hoping to get someone to compete at the QB position this draft. Ronald Tiffany is a year 10 Senior and my 2nd string is just that.
What Vides lacks in athleticism, he makes up for by being brilliant. His only other recruitment options were Ivy League schools, but the opportunity to play in the Pac12 was too much to pass up. If he doesn't bust, can make a passable competition for next season's starting role. If he busts? Oh well. If he booms? Well, I might roll with him the next 10 seasons.
Rd 5:
RT James Lee.
Another attempt to fill a need at RT, but from a different angle. Converted from FB, Lee brings solid blocking ability that we hope grows with his weight. He lacks the athleticism needed to block speed rushers, but so did everyone else beyond the 3rd rd. If my 2nd rd recruit, Gerardo Taylor busts, Lee can at least fill the roster spot.
Rd 6 and Rd 7:
Basically camp fodder here, we let the scouts send us a couple guys. WR Peter Ginn is extremely mediocre with a 100 volatility. Who knows?
FS Jeremy Hartle has OK speed/acc for this late in recruitment, but does nothing else well. Reports are the Lacrosse team is currently scouting him.
