2032 post-draft thoughts:
The combination of free agency and the draft has given Dawg fans both hope for the future AND the possibility of keeping a current window open.
The Huskies have boasted a couple of the leagues best RB over the life of the league. (Gaskin/Kaufman). Unfortunately, the team's success has been subdued due, at least in part, to extremely mediocre QB play.
Armed with plenty of cap money to spend, the Huskies, for the first time, landed a big time transfer. QB Alex Smith joins the squad from Utah. Smith has three years of eligibility to play in Seattle and is, by far, the most talented QB to put on a Husky uniform. (In this league...NOT real life). So the prospect of combining Kaufman's dual threat talent with a quality QB has fans excited.
Speaking to the aging RB room, the Dawgs addressed the issue; not once, not twice, but three times. Freshman commits Beno Bryant(1st rd) and Corey Dillon(3rd rd) both bring speed AND volatility. (Let training camp be good please!). Husky coaches also are feeling pretty happy about bringing in a Late FA transfer (Matthew Derrick) With Speed/Acc AND blocking ability, coaches see Derrick getting a lot of reps at FB as well.
The Husky WR group should also improve. Compared to the rest of the league, they are just flat SLOW. With Spider Gaines the only guy with 80+ speed. In the 5th rd, we took Kasen Williams. While not a burner, he is, at least, faster then 3 of the 4 incumbents. Coaches expect Freshman RB Beno Bryant to play WR early on until Kaufman retires.
In rd 2, the Huskies took NO risk, but with a moderate ceiling OL Ed Cunningham. Cunningham can step into a starting LG spot adding to the expected offensive improvement.
4th round CB Sidney Jones should be ready to step into a starting role in a year or two when Kevin King graduates.
6th rd Kicker Chuck Nelson looks better than Jeff Jaeger. But they will compete in camp.
As long as training camp doesn't kill me, I am looking forward to the season. We are embarrassed that the Division title left the State of Washington for the first time and have every intention of getting it back.
