5 Aug 2017 | Fayetteville, AR - The very first scrimmage for the Black Knights was deemed a “good outing” by Head Coach, Francisco Alvarez. “It was nice for everyone, including coaches to get out there and knock of the rust and dust!” “Scrimmages are a ‘practice’ though.” [Coach is keepin’ it real] “I just want to thank the good folks of Fayetteville for having us down.” “I think both squads had a lot to take away, to work on.” “We look forward to having them up to start the season in week one, hopefully they don’t return the favor!” ARMY 24 ARKANSAS 10

Offense: Army’s 1st unit had 8 drives of 5 plays or more with only three of them resulting in a punt. The running game is going to need a little work for sure, only amassing 63y on 32 attempts. Ahmad Bradshaw was busy, putting the ball up 38 times, completing 19 of those for 338y, 2 TD’s and one Int. Darnell Woolfork had the lone rushing touchdown for Army, on a one yard plunge in the 2nd qtr.

Defense: The defense held Arkansas to just 197 total yards, effectively shutting down the Razorbacks air attack. The pass rush got to their QB’s 4 times for sacks with Andrew McLean getting 2 of those and CB Max Regan intercepted a pass. Cameron Jones and Mike Reynolds led the way in tackles for the Knights, accumulating 16 for the game.

M*A*S*H* Unit – 4 Total Injuries – 1 Doubtful RT Noah Utley (Hand) Out 3 weeks. 3 Probables

Notes: 7 different receivers caught passes. Kicker, Carl Lopp was 1 for 2 on FG’s and 3 for 3 on XP’s. The offensive line allowed only one sack. Army chose to run their 1st team for the entire game. “We will back off on that, but having this as the first chance to see these guys play, we wanted our leaders to go the whole game for a litmus test.” – Arthur Salter, Offensive Coordinator

12 Aug 2017 | West Point, NY - Army's second scrimmage was set up on the Black Knight's side to be more of the traditional scrimmage than the first game. "We definitely wanted to split the 1st team/2nd team time, down the middle.", said Defensive Coord. George Nix. "We really wanted to concentrate on getting everyone on the roster some playing time and work some game-like conditioning into camp." TENNESSEE 34 ARMY 27

"It looked like Tennessee was in line with the same plan, which gives us some serious cause for concern.", said Fran Alvarez. "They ran all over our 1st team defense there with Albert Hoffman and really, all of their RB's...it was pretty pathetic!"

Offense: Projected back-up QB Chris Carter got his first reps of the year and that wasn't great, either. Carter 16/26 3TD's and 3 Int's in the second half, when Tennessee was likely rotating in many of their 2nd string defensive players.

The running game still did nothing to rave about. Projected starter Andy Davidson (precautionary/ankle) did not play. Mike Hund, Darnell Woolfork and FB Allen Wallace combined for a 2.77yds per carry and 0 TD's. Ahmad Bradshaw had a mention before heading to the shower, "There is really nothing we did well today." "We are going to need to get better focus when we get out here, between the lines." "We had a good week of practice, but it just didn't show tonight."

Defense: Aside from the three sacks registered by Cole Christianson, Domingo Bruno and Robert Connor, the defense more or less looked like it took the night off. The first team defense giving up TD's on four of the Vols' first 7 possessions. "It felt like our Defense was on the field the entire 1st half!" - CB Max Regan "They just kept moving the chains!" 3 of Tennessee's 4 TD drives were 7 plays or more, with the 4th one taking 5 plays, all in the first half.

M*A*S*H* Unit - 6 Total Injuries: 2 Probable (TE, CB), 3 Questionable (LT, RT, DT) 1 Doubtful (CB) RB Andy Davidson will return for Scrimmage III but on very limited basis.

Notes: By the end of the scrimmage, both teams were fairly even on total yardage for the game BK458/Vols468. Francisco Wrenn had a monster game with 5 catches for 197y/2TD and Buck Armstrong, considered to be a "flyer" by many pundits, had a good showing with 5 catches for 70y and a score. K Carl Lopp 2/2 FG 3/3 XP's

IN DEATH VALLEY
19 Aug 2017 | Mount Pleasant SC -Scrimmage #3 for the Black Knights was not especially impressive to the coaching staff. Tempered by the overriding thought that it is "scrimmage" time, the coach's were visibly concerned with a number of things going on with this young team. "We have to do better defensively. It's that simple." "And offensively this was purely a game to get Chris and Roger some reps under center." CLEMSON 44 ARMY 10

"We gave up over 600 yards of offense tonight, 200/400 to be exact!" "That scares the living %$#$@! out of me!", said head coach Fran Alvarez (and spoken like a true, former Drill Sergeant.)

Offense: Combined the two backup QB's were 18 of 42 for 266 yards. Neither threw for a score and Carter had one interception.

The running game: A.W.O.L. One game to try to get a handle on this......

Defense: See: Sieve

M*A*S*H* Unit 1 RB Out 6; 2 DL's Both Probable; 2 LB's Probable; 1 CB Questionable; 1 FS Probable

Notes: The confidence level for this team 'now' as compared to 'coming in' has decreased, considerably. The coaching staff will be meeting for most of the day tomorrow and friday to gameplan and prepare for the home opener which is just a few days away.

26 Aug 2017 | West Point, NY -The team's final scrimmage went "ok" for the Black Knights. The first teamer's were only given a quarter to play and Ahmad Bradshaw made the most of it, throwing two touchdown passes, one for 72yds to John Spann and the other to upstart Buck Armstrong on a little one yard toss. Army would go on to add 2 more scores in the second half, one on the ground, a Darnell Woolfork run for 5 yards and another strike to Armstrong by Roger Williams, good for 61 yards.ARMY 34 KANSAS 29

"Overall it's been an okay camp for us." said Coach Alvarez. And tonight was great along with the last couple of days working with GM trslick and the whole crew from Kansas. "They have a good team, with a bunch of stand-up, good men playing on their team." "We wish them the best!"

Offense: Things went better here for sure. Especially with the ground game; 3 backs accounted for 101 rushing yards on 18 carries, with Woolfork getting the TD. The experiment with Chris Carter didn't really net much since he was tabbed as a "starter" and basically came out of the game after just 4 carries. Running Backs coach Lorenzo Brown - "We had to respect the fact that we still had to keep him [Carter] healthy....I mean, he is our back up QB." "We're not done with this, though." "You'll see Chris Carter in the backfield during the regular season at some point as well."

Defense: Still not much to rave about here, as the defense still gave up well over 500 yards of offense on the night. "Gave up?" "That makes it sound like we may have stopped them at some point!", defensive coordinator, Nix. Army is going to have to do something on the defensive side of the ball if they hope to secure a post season bid.

M*A*S*H* Unit 10 Players on the Injury Report. Just 2 of them are on the offensive side of the ball. WR Mike Hund and RB Andy Davidson is listed with a sore elbow and is Probable for the opener vs Arkansas. Of the 8 defensive players, only DT Ken McGriff is listed as questionable. All else are probable and likely to play on Friday Night.

Notes: Though the defense looks lost, there are moments of brilliance that were seen of the offense in the four scrimmage games. Ahmad Bradshaw looks sharp, along with a very talented looking core of young receivers. If the running game can perform similarly to what they just did against Kansas, they have a chance in staying in games though ball control. This writer's assessment of this team's future? A top 15 ranking at best, and no playoffs this year.
