ARMY @ KANSAS - WEEK 1 - 2018
Lawrence, KS – The Army Black Knights, under the guidance of new head coach, Sammy Welch will embark on the 2018 season facing off against the Kansas Jayhawks. Army is coming off of their first season in the MFN NCAA League where they finished 9-7 and still a couple of games out of the playoff hunt. That’s because, in large-part, of two of the teams in the Indie Sub-Conference, Notre Dame and Marshall lit things up last year with the Irish going 14-2 on the year and making the National Championship game and the Thundering Herd finishing the regular season at 12-4.
The Knights had a few changes in the off-season but in the scheme of things, less than most. The change that resounds the most would be the change at Head Coach. Fran Alvarez was let go and the position was filled from within. Army Director of F.O., Bryno promoted Sammy Welch from Offensive Line coach to take the lead position. “We really liked what Sammy was doing with our O-line, there’s no question.” “But it’s no mystery to Sammy’s history with running a team and also leading the way on the defensive side of the ball.” Welch comes from the NFL where he guided the Houston Texans’ defense for 3 seasons.
On the field, the Knight’s signed 6 total new freshman to the team, with only two of those freshman projected to be starters. WR Sean Eckert and SLB King Drake will fill two very needed positions that Army needed help with. “We needed someone defensively who could help contain the run.”, said HC Welch. “And Sean, will give us another target for Ahmad, to give our offense a little needed boost.” Army also added a backup running back, a 5th receiver, and an offensive lineman. As a walk-on, the Knights signed Graduate-Senior transfer, Marvin Singleton, a DT that will help fight the running attack. Singleton was the 23rd pick for Alabama in the original allocation signing period.
Tonight’s game against Kansas will be a first-time match up for the two teams. Kansas finished the 2017 campaign at 7-9 but played well at home with a 5-3 record in Lawrence. Two of those wins at home were against playoff teams. “We expect to have every aspect of our team challenged, tonight!”, said George Nix, the Defensive Coordinator. “Trslick is a wylie veteran of this game – we know he will come prepared.”
Ahmad Bradshaw had a few minutes to talk on his way to team meetings in the morning. “Improvement!” “That is our goal.” “We played the second half of last season strong.” We have to take that and be even better…every guy!” Bradshaw was asked what he thought their chances of making the post-season was. “I’m excited!” “Expectations by the general public and the pundits are pretty much…Army is not in the conversation!” “And that’s ok!” “It’s our job to give ‘em something to talk about – and that starts tonight!” And with a wink and a walk, Bradshaw was gone.
