3rd Practice Game vs. Notre Dame L -30-20The Sooners had an opportunity in their 3rd scrimmage for a pretty decent dress rehearsal for the regular season.
Both teams came in with 2-0 records in spring scrimmage games, and both teams left their projected starters in for a full 3 qtrs in this game. I say "projected" starters because after the game Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley made it clear that he has NOT named a starter yet at
any position..
"It's wide open" said Riley "There is an opportunity at every single position on this team...all they have to do is step up and show us that they can handle that responsibility."
"I thought I was ready to name a starting QB but after tonights game, that announcement is on hold." "There is an obvious disconnect between the throwers and the catchers on this team...I'm not sure yet if it's more of a
thrower problem or a
catcher problem but it's definitely a concern."
"Notre Dame's DB's were the main problem tonight though... they did a good job."
The Sooners had trouble sustaining any rhythm with their passing game and their running game was hardly used even though they were having at least a little bit of success.
But, once again failing to convert 3rd downs was a problem for the Sooners as they went a paltry 2/13 and also fumbled 3 times losing 1 of those. "We've definitely got to get better on 3rd downs" said Riley. "That's pitiful"
The Sooner defense was pretty good against the run and pretty average against the pass.
Giving up 310 yds thru the air......OU
DE John Page had 5 of the Sooners 8 sacks
"We wanted to put some pressure on their young QB, WinBush and he reacted very well."
"He picked up the blitz well and moved the pocket around to his advantage to buy himself some time...he's gonna be a good one." Riley said.
"We've got our work cut out for us." "I was an advocate to shorten the spring games to 2 but right now I'd go for 2 more after this one." Riley said scratching his head. "We may still be looking for a solid starting lineup 2 or 3 games into the season."
