2018 Season Gm 1 OU vs Texas

Red River Rivalry #1

Sooners kicked off the 2018 season at home against the Longhorns of the University of Texas.
This one turned out to be a real battle between 2 pretty good defenses as only 1 TD was scored in the contest. That TD was a 76 yard bomb from OU QB Austin Kendall to WR Marquise Brown.
Other than that OU's All American kicker Austin Seibert continues to make a name for himself going 4 for 4 and adding 12 points to that final score.

Defensively the Sooners pressured Texas QB Jose Griffin all game long sacking him 7 times.
Despite the pressure, Griffin had a pretty good game going 34/49 for 255 yds.

OU's defense would prevail though as they held the Longhorns to just a FG, and secured the 1st edition of this seasons Red River Rivalry!

2018 Season Gm 2... OU 42 vs Kentucky 10

The Sooners improved their record to 2-0 Friday night in front of 70,403 fans @ Memorial Stadium in Norman Oklahoma.

The OU offense rolled up 538 total yds, while the defense allowed the Wildcats 220 yds total.
Sooner QB Austin Kendall went 26/47 for 412 yds and 6 TD's and was sacked once. But, he also completed 3 passes to the visitors.
WR's Cyril Quiroz and Marquis Brown hauled in the bulk of those yards with 175 and 151 respectively.. Overall 7 different people had a reception in the game.
RB Jeff Stewart provided all the yardage in the running game gaining 121 yds on 24 carries.
Unfortunately he left the game late with a knee injury and will miss the Bedlam Bowl according to coach Lincoln Riley. "Yeah, he's out for the Oklahoma State game..it's not a tear thankfully but it's really sore and he can't walk on it so we'll work through that and see how he feels next week"

On the defensive side of the ball, the Sooners gave Kentucky QB Darrell Slack fits all night with not only 4 sacks and 2 INT's but also 27 hurries! 14 of those coming from DE William Banuelos who also had 1 sack. DT Frank Connolly added 2 sacks and also added 9 hurries.
Slacks numbers on the night were 15/55 for 205 yds 1 TD.

Next up....The Sooners will put on the war paint and load up the covered wagons as they travel into hostile territory for the 1st edition of BEDLAM for the 2018 season...
The Cowboys of Oklahoma State are laying low and hope to ambush the Sooners in this classic rivalry! Should be a good one!

2018 Season 2 Gm 3... OSU 17 vs OU 10

Oklahoma ventured into hostile territory and suffered their 1st defeat of the season, falling to a determined OSU Cowboy team 17-10 @ Boone Pickins Stadium in Stillwater. Despite the rainy weather, 58,360 fans showed up for the game which was also the 1st edition in 2018 of the classic Bedlam Rivalry.

OU's running game was pretty much non-existent as the Cowboys held the Sooners to a mere 57 yds on 28 carries. Oklahoma's starting RB Jeff Stewart watched the game from the sidelines in street clothes and on crutches as he nurses a knee injury.

The passing game wasn't much better as the Cowboy defense put the clamps down on QB Austin Kendall sacking him 4 times and picking off 1. The INT came on the Sooners very 1st possession at their own 39... Kendall also fumbled the ball away on the next possession at the OU 21 and led to the 1st OSU TD.
That put Oklahoma in a hole they could not climb out of and set the tone for the rest of the game.

The Sooner defense put up a decent fight but they just couldn't get off the field on 3rd down.
OSU went 7/17 on 3rd down and that resulted in a time of possession advantage of roughly 8 minutes which is huge. Not only did that keep OU's offense off the field, it also wore out the aggressive Oklahoma defense.

We caught up with Sooner head coach Lincoln Riley after the game and asked him about his teams performance. " Well, we looked pretty flat to be honest...nothing I can put my finger on.
Just didn't see very much intensity out there tonight from our side."
"Gotta give Oklahoma State credit...their crowd was into it, their players were into it, and they had something to prove."

We also asked him if the injury to RB Jeff Stewart hurt his teams chances in the game....
" While we certainly would rather him be in the game...No I don't think so. We're not making any excuses...ALL of our WR's can fill in at RB as well as a couple of our TE's and we just signed a RB who played well tonight...and he's only been here 1 day..." "This is simply a big time in state rivalry and both teams come into this game loaded for bear...records mean nothing in this game." Oklahoma State won the Bedlam Trophy tonight and we tip our hat to them for doing that... thankfully, we get another shot at getting that trophy back later on..........at our house."

2018 Season Gm 4... Marshall 19 vs OU 7

Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley is one of the most laid back people in the coaching profession...but even he has a flash point, and it was clear after another lackluster performance by the Sooners, which resulted in another road loss to Marshall...that that point had been reached.
Riley was clearly agitated with his teams effort, not only in this game but the last 2 games.
After an extended team meeting in the locker room after the game, we caught up with coach Riley.

"Coach Riley, we couldn't hear exactly what was being said in there...it was pretty clear that it wasn't a sunshine and rainbows meeting... would you care to share some of what you addressed with the team?"
"No I wouldn't, that's why we locked the door"
"I do want to say first and foremost congrats to Marshall.. they handled their business tonight and took it to us...we couldn't do anything offensively and our defense spent way too much time on the field...they almost doubled us up on time of possession.."

"But, it was clear by the tone coming from the locker room that you weren't happy with your teams performance tonight...is that a fair assessment?"

"No, I'm not happy at all about this teams performance tonight or last week either for that matter, I'm pretty pissed off about it actually" "Our offense has been non existent in these last 2 games...mostly because of the defenses we've faced, but some of it is just plain stupid mistakes...bad passes, missed blocks, and overall lack of effort, especially on offense."
"But, I'll say this and I'm done...Not only am I the head coach, I'm also the off coordinator and I can assure you and our fans that I'm gonna fix it, especially the part about lack of effort."
"And also starting with our next practice, we WILL find a QB who can actually hit the broad side of a **** barn...."

2018 Season Gm 6.. OU - 49 vs LSU - 26

The #11 ranked Oklahoma Sooners walked into a very loud and rowdy Death Valley Friday night to take on the #5 LSU Tigers in front of 88,367 fans.
The Sooners are winless on the road this season but came into this one looking for some payback after being bumped out of the playoffs last season by the Tigers in Baton Rouge.

OU sprinted out to an early 15-0 lead but LSU scratched and clawed their way back into it and after LSU SS Herbert Grammer intercepted an Austin Kendall pass at the LSU 47... and the Tigers trailing 15-14, they had 21 seconds to take the lead.
On 1st down LSU QB Timothy Soileau found WR Jeffrey Burkhart for 30 yds and with 2 seconds left LSU took a 17-15 lead into the locker room at intermission.

But that would be the last time they would lead on this night because on the opening kickoff to start the 2nd half, WR Cyril Quiroz took the kick at the goal line and rambled 100 yds for the TD and Oklahoma never looked back after that.... outscoring LSU 34-9 in the second half and pulling off the upset on the road.

4 different receivers had over 100 yds on the night and TE Grant Calcaterra added another 92 yds as OU QB Austin Kendall and newcomer QB Larry Merrell combined for 596 yds passing.
RB Jeff Stewart led all receivers with 132 yds followed by Cyril Quiroz and Marquis Brown with 126 and 123 yds respectively...WR Abdul Adams also added 104 yds.

The Sooner defense continues to be a tough task for opponents holding LSU to 321 total yds 48 of which were on the ground.
They were however bit by the injury bug in this one as 4 starters hit the doubtful or questionable list for the next game against Arkansas.

2018 Season Gm 7... Arkansas 51 OU 34

The Oklahoma Sooners are not used to losing at home...it only happened 2 times last season, and had not happened yet this season until Arkansas showed up this week and whooped OU like a red headed step kid.

In what OU head coach Lincoln Riley called "one of the weirdest games he's ever seen" The usually stout Sooner defense spent the night looking at the *** end of a Hog sprinting to the end zone. "I think they only punted 1 time." said Riley.... " and we only punted twice... this is a crazy game."

Arkansas rolled up 607 yds of offense which led to 51 points on a team that was in the top 3 scoring defense in the league before the game... "They were clearly better prepared for this game than we were." said coach Riley

Offensively the Sooners put up 433 yds and played very well especially the passing game...their running game continued to struggle however adding only 36 of those yds, and that will need to be addressed quickly if OU is going to entertain any playoff hopes at all. QB Austin Kendall is playing better since he was benched 2 games ago. He was 19/32 for 269 yds and 2 TD's in the game with 1 sack and no INT's

The Sooners have also incurred an abundance of injuries lately but coach Riley doesn't want to dwell on that aspect and refuses to use that as an excuse. "Next man up." says Riley, " We got beat by Arkansas, not injuries." "All teams have injuries...everybody on this team needs to stay ready to play."
