The Oklahoma Sooners got out of the blocks clean to start the 2020 season Friday night with a big win over Syracuse 29-3 @ Memorial Stadium in Norman in front of 59,794 Sooner faithful.

The big story in this game was the 2020 version of the Sooner defense as this unit held a really good Syracuse passing offense to just 3 points.
"I'm really stoked about the way our defense came out and played tonight." said head coach Lincoln Riley. "They(Syracuse) racked up 1400 yds passing and scored over 100 points against 3 pretty good teams in pre season scrimmages." "I know those don't count, but I'm a firm believer in you practice what you preach...so we worked hard on affecting and disrupting their passing game."

The Sooners "affected and disrupted" the Orange passing game to the tune of 2 INT's and 6 sacks and held them to 172 yd net passing and managing just 1/10 on 3rd down.

OU also doubled up Syracuse in time of possession 40:25 to 19:37 (don't ask me why that doesn't add up to 60:00)

On the offensive side coach Riley was cautiously optimistic.." Listen, we've got to do a better job finishing off drives." "Those FG in the redzone are a recipe for a loss...especially in this league." "We need to turn those FG's into TD's"

"That being said, I am very pleased with how
QB Austin Kendall has progressed from about halfway thru last season to this point. "He picked up where he left off last season." said Riley.
"He's a lot calmer now as the game slows down for him and he's making plays for us now that he wasn't in previous seasons." " I think he's very capable of having a huge season"

On the night QB Austin Kendall went 27/35 for 435 yds and 2 TD's and only 1 sack. That performance earned him a 137.20 passer rating.

WR's Cyril Quiroz and Abdul Adams topped the "yards gained" stat on the night with 114, and 113 respectively.
Redshirt freshman WR Parnell Motley made his debut in the crimson and cream a good one as he hauled in 6 passes for 72 yds and a TD.

RB Rodney Anderson handled most of the work in the run game and picked up 85 yds on 24 carries. He also had 4 receptions for 44 additional yards.

Next up the Sooners host the Stanford Cardinal

Sooners sit at 2-0 after 35-0 win over Stanford

The Oklahoma Sooners improved their record to 2-0 in this young season by rolling over the Stanford Cardinal last night at a hot Memorial Stadium in Norman with 62,502 fans in attendance.

And for the 2nd game in a row, the defense was the bright spot for the Sooners, with an impressive shutout.

Meanwhile the OU offense seemed to sputter once again in the red zone. Ordinarily you'd think a coach would be pleased with his offense putting up 35 points but head coach Lincoln Riley was anything but pleased....
"Standing there on the sidelines watching that ****..It was the same feeling I have when we're losing a game.... not good." "4 times we get in the red zone and get 1 TD out of it. We end up with 9 points instead of 21." "We've got to change things up a bit on the play calling in the red zone and in our red zone game planning... before it jumps up and bites us."

Riley's mood greatly improved when asked about his defense....
" They looked awesome" "I think we held em to -4 yds rushing and 109 total for the game with the shutout." 5 sacks and 2 picks" "I don't think we even let em in the red zone, so they had a great game"

The stats for that defense include:

DB Trey Brown 4 tackles, 1 knockdown with 2 INT's
DE John Page... 5 tackles,2 sacks, 5 hurries
DT Frank Connolly.... 3 tackles,2 sacks, 4 hurries
LB Caleb Kelly.... 2 tackles,1 sack, 3 hurries

Offensive Stats:

QB Austin Kendall... 22/37 366yds 1 TD and 1 INT
RB Jeff Stewart ... 26 carries for 120 yds, 1 rec. 15 yds
RB Rodney Anderson ... 10 carries for 53 yds, 1 TD
WR Cyril Quiroz ...10 rec. 208 yds, 1 TD

Next up the Sooners hitch up the wagons and travel across country to Oregon to take on the Ducks who are 1-1 on the season.

Season 2020 Game 3...Sooners 34. Ducks 17.

Oklahoma traveled to the northwest territory to do some duck hunting, and their first road trip of the young season was a successful one as far as the win-loss record, as the Sooners prevail 34-17 over the Oregon Ducks......
It was not so successful in the "staying healthy" record however for OU as they return home with some wounded.
All American LB Caleb Kelly sustained a severely sprained knee and will miss some time. Also in this game DT Frank Connolly re-aggravated a severe neck injury that caused him to miss more than half of last season. He will miss 3 or 4 games.

As for the game....

Offense:
QB Austin Kendall continues his red hot play going 22/31 for 407 yds and 4 TD's and a blistering 152.89 passer rating. Starting to hear some Heisman whispers around campus.

WR Abdul Adams hauled in 10 of those rec for a whopping 290 yds and accounted for all 4 of those TD's!

WR Abdul Adams

Defense:
DE's John Page and William Banuelos each had 3 sacks.

Next up...Back home to face the Cal Bears!

Season 2020... Game 4 Sooners 57. Bears 22.

OU returns home to the friendly confines of Memorial Stadium in front of 67,800 fans and comes away with their 4th consecutive victory defeating the Golden Bears of The University of California
57 - 22 .

The most glaring thing that jumps out about this game is the unleashing of the Sooners running game as that unit rang up 399 yds on 32 carries for a whopping 12.47 yds per carry!
Add 413 yds in passing and that will get you 812 yds of offense on the night...and that kind of production will win a lot of games.

WR turned RB Marquise "Hollywood" Brown paced the ground game racking up 190 yds on just 8 carries for a 23.75 ypc avg...with 2 TD's.
RB Jeff Stewart also had an outstanding night with 177 yds on 17 carries for a 10.41 ypc avg.

WR/RB Hollywood Brown

When asked about Brown lining up in the backfield coach Lincoln Riley explained..." As I have said before, we've got probably 3 WR's who can play RB." "Abdul Adams is a converted RB, he can step in that spot as well" "This isn't the 1st time Marquise has played the position." "He's done it quite a bit" "We put him in there last week because Jeff was nicked up, and he did well..." Marquise is a California kid so he was really hoping to show out this week against the Bears and I'll be damned if he didn't do that!" "I'm real impressed with the effort and I'm really happy for him."

Not to be outdone....the Sooner WR's had a pretty good night too with WR Cyril Quiroz hauling in 11 catches worth 202 yds with 3 TD's.... and the aforementioned WR Abdul Adams snared 5 passes for 116 yds and a 23.20 ypc.

The Sooner defense continues to play well despite the absence of LB Caleb Kelly and DT Frank Connolly as they had 9 sacks 2 INT's and 2 FF.
They gave up 22 points in this game but that was more due to the fact that both Bears QB's Rodney Williams and John Little.. as well as WR Hector Quick had very good games for Cal.

The 2 QB's combined for 443 yds and 3 TD's...and Quick had 12 catches for 218 yds with a TD..

Next up the Sooners host the Florida Gators...

Game 6 2020

Rivalry Week Part 1...BEDLAM

The OSU Cowboys made it known that the Big12 title was not going to be free for the taking this, or any other season as they spanked previously unbeaten Oklahoma this week 30-23 at a packed Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater Oklahoma.

"It's Bedlam" said OU head coach Lincoln Riley after the game. " It's the Hatfields and McCoys" "In state rivalries are intense and exciting for both teams as well as both cities and most importantly the fans."
"It would be unrealistic to think that we would or could win all of these games" "Our team played hard tonight and it came down to 1 critical mistake....and in this rivalry, that will cost you a game."
" And before I forget, we **** in the red zone...I'm gonna have to do a helluva lot better job with our RZ playcalling" "We had 3 opportunities tonight and couldn't punch it in there.... those hurt."
"Oklahoma State is a great program with a great football team." "We'll regroup and wait for the rematch."

OU QB Austin Kendall had his worst game of the season going 17/38 for 267yds and 0 TD's and 2 INTs
The Cowboy defense applied heavy pressure all night long and sacked Kendall 4 times to go with those 2 INT's.

Redshirt freshman WR Parnell Motley gets the game ball on offense: 6 rec/105yds
FS Robbie Barnes gets a game ball on defense for his 2 INT's and 5 tackles.

Next up: The Red River Rivalry!

2020 Season Game 7

Rivalry week Part 2 Red River Rivalry

The Sooners saddled up and headed to Dallas Friday night looking to get backin the win column.
No better medicine for a loss than getting to the next game. And no better game to get to after a loss than a big time college rivalry for braggin rights to the Red River!

The Sooners started off slow but by the time the dust settled and the clock showed all zero's they rolled over the Texas Longhorns by a score of 45-14.

The running game for OU continues to be very productive, RB Jeff Stewart had 108yds on 15 carries and a TD. Backup RB Fr Rodney Anderson had a good night as well in the kicking game taking the opening kickoff back 106 yds for a TD.

WR Abdul Adams also picked up 157yds on 7 rec and a TD

The defense also continues to do solid work...
FS Ricky DeBerry had 5 tkls and 2 INT's on the night and redshirt freshman LB Addison Gumbs had 1 INT and 4 tkls.
The Sooner defense also had 5 sacks and a fumble recovery

The only concern coming out of this game was the play of QB Austin Kendall...for the 2nd game in a row he seemed to struggle at times throwing 4 INT's...that makes 6 INT's in his last 2 games...we asked coach Riley if he was concerned.

"I'm not concerned in the way that you might think I'd be concerned, he's not hurt or anything"
"His problem tonight was Raul Lewis..that kid's a ball hawk." He took Kendall to school tonight." "Last week was the same thing...Oklahoma State has some of the best DB's in this league" "Most of Austins problems these last 2 games is a lack of focus against really good defenses" " He just needs to pull his head out of his *** and play football"

Next up: Back home to face trslick and the Kansas Jayhawks!
