CB DJ Brown is an athlete from the DC area that the Irish have been in contact with for awhile. He can play a couple positions but has been listed as a db for his first training camp. Brown will have to lose some weight and increase his speed in order to be a competent cover guy. With a strong spring Brown has some skills with room to grow. In a very deep and crowded defensive backfield he'll have his hands full as he tries to find his place.

QB Ian Book comes to South Bend all the way from El Dorado Hills, California and looks to compete with sophomore Tanner Schafer for the third spot on the QB depth chart. While Book isn't a top flight prospect he possesses some skills hat can help him be a viable backup in the future. He has some speed for the position and has shown solid accuracy from both inside, and outside of the pocket. He doesn't have a strong arm and struggles to read the blitz which may hurt his chances.

Quarter Season Report:

Record: 3-1
Points Scored: 207 (1st)
Points against: 69 (3rd)

Offense:
It's been an exciting start to the season for the Irish offense. Currently ranked #1 in total yards with 702 per game, they are as balanced as ever ranking 1st in rushing yards and 2nd in passing. Led by QB Leslie Jaques and WR Tony Jones, Notre Dame has shook off their opening game loss and have put up an average of 61 points the last three. Tony Jones continues to be the most dominant player in the nation and is looking to best his NCAA record for receiving yards a season ago. The offensive line hasn't been as good as the team had hoped but they are still more than adaquete. Second year tight end Durham Smythe has posted 197 yards and 3 TD's through 4 games making him a viable option in the potent attack.

Defense:
The defense has been consistent so far ranking 3rd in the nation giving up a total of 318.3 yards per game. In two games the defense hasn't allowed a TD and have allowed 4 total for the season. The defensive line hasn't been as effective getting sacks but they are still applying constant pressure in the backfield. The Irish defense has been particularly stronger versus the pass than the run, and the addition of top recruit Houston Griffith has strengthened the defensive backfield group.

Special Teams:
The biggest disappointment for the Notre Dame team in 2022 has to be the special teams unit. In the opener the kickoff coverage was abysmal giving up two return TD's that turned the tide of that game. First year starting Kicker Kyle Brindza has been wildly inconsistent making only 4/9 of his kicks through four games. The staff has made some adjustments in hopes of reviving a unit that has a lot of potential. If the Irish are going to repeat as National Champions they will need this group to perform more consistently.

Mid Season Report:

Record: 7-1
Points Scored: 389 (1st)
Points against: 69 (2nd)

Offense:
The Irish still rank first in total offense with 645.5 yards a game. The offense comes in waves and has seen their production pick up once their opponent tires down. Led by QB Leslie Jacques the Irish are one of the balanced attacks in the country. Ranking 2nd in passing and first in rushing, the staff is pretty happy about the versatility of the offense. Running back duo Dexter Williams and James Rorie keep opponents honest and not completely focused on Heisman candidate Tony Jones and former 2nd Team All- American Chase Claypool out wide. A player starting to make some noise is second year tight end Durham Smythe. He is second on the team with 7 receiving TD's at the midway point.

Defense:
The identity of Notre Dame's program has always been their defense and this season is no different. After facing off against the #2 Utah Utes the defense stepped up and allowed only two fg's all game. The pass rush started slow but ends Dalton Hayes and Andrew Trumbley are starting to get home as they attempt to reach double digits once again. The defense is built around their secondary and despite team's passing more frequently on the Irish they still rank third in the nation in passing yards allowed. Freshman CB Houston Griffith has added some fire to the group and really solidified a deep secondary.

Special Teams:
Kicker Kyle Brindza has been a source of many fans frustrations over the first half of his short career but he's shown signs of improvement. He is connecting on 92% of his xpt's but is still struggling to find consistency on field goals. He's 12/18 but the team is hoping he can get more production the more confidence he gains. The return game has been nonexistent so far as special teams ace C.J. Holmes has only got 6 returns all season for an avg of 31 yards. Ray Guy award recipient Timothy Shuler is having another solid season but has seen his net avg dip slightly from his incredible 2020 season.

3 Quarter Season Report:

Record: 11-1
Points Scored: 582 (48.5 avg) 1st
Points against: 180 (11.25) 3rd

Offense:
The Irish remain atop the NCAA in offense by a remarkable margin of almost 100 yards per game. The passing game has been the strength of the team and has thrown 54 TD's with only 11 ints. Not to be to be overshadowed, the Irish ground attack ranks second in the nation and is getting good balance between the two star RB's Dexter Williams and James Rorie. While WR Tony Jones is only 49 yards away from breaking the single season yardage record he set last year, it's the second year tightend Durham Smythe that has been on fire. In the last two games Smythe has topped the 100 yard mark and has raised his career high TD mark to 12.

Defense:
Defensively the Irish have been solid yet not as dominant as in previous years. Currently ranked 4th the country the Irish have shown a bend but don't break approach in recent weeks. Despite the 5 sack effort by DT Jerry Tillery against Iowa, the defense hasn't been as disruptive as they have been in previous seasons. The defensive backfield are giving up a higher percentage of completions but they rank 2nd in yards per catch. Captain SS Jay Elliott is having a standout season with 71 tackles, 14 knockdowns, 38.8 comp% and 5 ints.

Special Teams:
Kicker Kyle Brindza has hit 11 of his last 13 fieldgoals and is starting to gain the confidence of his teammates. With all the talent in the world Brindza should continue to improve the more games he gets under his belt. Kick Returner C.J. Holmes returned his first kickoff of the year for a td against Alabama and is averaging 35 yards a return.
