#1 Notre Dame-20, #17 Florida St.-18

In the team's final road game of the season the Irish once again pulled out a squeaker. Marred by two Yoon missed fg's and 10 team penalties, the Irish looked unmotivated and lethargic. Resting a handful of starters is no excuse for the poor performance especially as the bowl playoffs are in sight. The defense did a decent job of slowing down the FSU attack but if they want to be the best they must buckle down. Next week the Irish head home to take on rival Army in a game with no playoff ramifications. Notre Dame may be resting some players as they hope to get healthy for their Bowl game.

VS

#1 Notre Dame-50, #21 Army-31

This game went completely off the rails from the get go. In a rematch of last year's Rose Bowl that saw two dynamic defenses battle for every inch this game was a classic shootout. A rivalry game that really had no ramifications except pride. Notre Dame passed for 658 yards and scored 50 points against a defense that has been nothing but stout against them in the past. Led by the freshman WR Equanimeous St. Brown, Notre Dame are still trying to find their way after losing former Biletnikoff Award winner Quincy Brown for the season with a broken leg. The offense moved the ball throughout the game but still turned it over a whopping 5 times. The jury is still out on the Irish when it comes to pressure football in Bowl games but they are going to celebrate the first undefeated season in NCAA history. With a bye week coming up the Irish will try to get healthy so they can make a run at the trophy.

VS

#1 Notre Dame-35, #11 Rutgers-13

It was a classic Notre Dame meltdown on offense in a bowl game. The coach decided to pass early and often. Unfortunately for the Irish the passing game was playing like they have in previous year losses in the playoffs. The difference in 2019? The defense is just better. They shut down the Rutgers offense for most of the game and allowed the offense enough chances that they pushed the lead to a comfortable margin. With four interceptions that included a couple right by their own endzone, the offense made it really hard for the league's best defense. The team's leader and captain Jay Elliot had an incredible game with 2 interceptions and a 7.7% catch allowed with 13 ***** thrown his way. All year Elliot has proved he is one of the league's premiere players in just his third year. With the win the Irish will welcome Arizona to South Bend in a rematch of week one. The Wildcats went to the Big House in the Fiesta Bowl and stunned Michigan in a very competitive game.

2020 Notre Dame Transfers

DT-Donald Vann (11th year)

The Irish were desperate to replace their 2nd Team All-American DT Eugene Redus and landed a player that has the potential to be similar. Vann has all the measurables and skills to be a dominant player in this defense if he can get his head on straight and live up to expectations. After accumulating 29 sacks in his first two seasons in Miami, Vann had a horrible year in 2019 with only 5. Some will attribute his health as a major factor but others think his age is starting to catch up with him. He will have one season in South Bend to try and help the Irish accomplish their championship aspirations.

2020 Notre Dame Transfers

QB-James Sousa (12th Year)

In a surprise move in this transfer period the Notre Dame brass decided to take a flyer on one of the best player's in the nation last season. Michigan's QB James Sousa finished third in the Heisman and led the Wolverines high powered passing attack the last three years. Sousa isn't the flashiest player when you break down his skill set piece by piece, but he is super productive. He excels in a rotation and just piles up the numbers. It's not clear if he will break the roster in South Bend due to the gluttony of QB talent already on the team but if he does he may be one of the sleeper players of of the offseason.

2020 Freshman Class

1-30 TE Durham Smythe

Smythe is an athletic split end that has the ability to line up in the slot or in the backfield. He's as fast as you'll see at the position and has the potential to be a very good weapon in the Irish offense. He is still developing as a blocker and will need time if they decide to you use him as an inline tightend but he should be a nice addition to the team.

2-30

Aaron Banks was a top recruit from the state of Florida that slipped a little off the radar from a lot of power conference schools. He's a mammoth man tipping the scales at 329 pounds. He has good feet and there's a lot of potential growth with this player. While he's not elite in his blocking skills he does possess game altering power and will be immediately valuable in short yardage. He's not without his faults as his off the field behavior and work ethic have been questioned. It will be a challenge for the Irish staff to get Banks to reach his potential but if they do he will be a force on the line for years to come.

Contrary to popular belief the Irish can actually sign players that will improve :)

1-30 TE Durham Smythe (+26/+3)

2-30 G Aaron Banks (+12/-8)

3-30 G Logan Plantz (+19/+9)

4-30 K Kyle Brindza (+10/+12)

5-30 G Damon King (+8/+11)

Overall
(+75/+27) Still bummed about missing out on Banks as he was a player that really could have shined with a good camp. Adding a front line everydown tightend and two booming young lineman will help out for the future. Brindza is the fourth kicker the Irish have recruited and may be the last. The class as a whole might not be flashy but it's definitely a good result after last year's debacle.

AT

Notre Dame-33, Kentucky-23

It was a week one matchup of the two #1 seeds from last year's Bowl Playoffs. Notre Dame traveled to Kentucky in front of a hostile crowd and grinded out a tough win. The Irish offense was under seige as the Wildcats have employed an all out blitz defense that has made life tough for opponents. The offense was able to hit a couple long catch and runs against the blitz which turned the tide of the game. Leading 30-13 in the fourth the Irish started playing a little too soft and let the Wildcats climb back in. The biggest difference in this game was the four interceptions the Kentucky QB threw compared to none for the Irish. Getting out of town with the win is huge since the Irish will head home to play the arch rival Army in what looks to be an early season slugfest.

VS

Notre Dame-18, Army-9
After lighting up the score board in their last head to head, the Indy rivals made a clear statement in this affair that defense would be a priority. Both offenses were turning it over at a high rate but couldn't capitalize on them as much as they had hoped for. Notre Dame was able to suffocate Army's QB and sacked him 8 times and picked him off 4 times. Army's defense was amped up as well and really held down the Irish offense. While Notre Dame hasn't been flashy this season through two games they are excited about where they are after playing two tough teams. Next up the Irish continue their three game homestand by welcoming in a hungry 0-2 Cal Bears team.

WR Tony Jones (9 Rec, 129 Yards, 1 TD)

CB Shaun Crawford (3 Tckl, 10 ThrownAt, 1 KnckDn, 40% Allowed%, 2 Int)
